Product Description The OXO Smooth Edge Can Opener cuts on the side of the can, below the edge - leaving no sharp edges on a can or lid. The side-wind knob with non-slip, comfortable grip is easy to use. The durable cutting wheel doesn't touch the can contents, while the lid pliers allow no-touch lid removal. It's a safe, hygenic way to open large & small lids.
Amazon.com Review Sometimes the wheel needs to be reinvented, and the side-operation can opener, like this Good Grips Smooth Edge model from Oxo, is a case in point. Designed to operate on the horizontal, the opener makes a smooth cut below the can edge. The lid doesn't fall into the can, and the opener makes minimal contact with can contents. Built-in lid pliers let you grip the lid without touching it for clean and efficient removal. Though the large handles may be unwieldy for small hands, Oxo does use soft, nonslip material for a more comfortable grip. Like most standard manual openers, this unit is designed for right-handed operation. It measures 7-1/2 inches long and is safe for the dishwasher. --Emily Bedard

Nice gadget January 5, 2009 Irish Rose (Calif) Yes, the product doesn't quite give you a hint that it is done making a 360 around the can, but I haven't experienced it once failing to open a can (if you do, may I suggest you ask for a replacement--Amazon will pay shipping both ways for defective items). I do find that I sometimes have to work the opener a bit, making sure that I have the correct seating (thus the minus one star), but I adore the little pliers on the opener's side. They help one to lift off the lid with ease. I loved it so much that I threw out my old style opener and had to buy another to open my tuna cans, so I can drain the liquids better with a decent lip. Other than that, I never whip the old-styled opener out to use.
Love this tool!! January 1, 2009 Not a Bozo Though this is clunky and definitely not a slim design, I found this to be a fantastic can opener. (Thus the only reason for 4 stars, rather than 5). I love that it opens the can with relative ease and there are no sharp edges. I'd recommend this product to others!
This is the one to buy December 22, 2008 P. Davis (Georgia) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Tired of lousy can openers, I ordered three different ones from Amazon. Tried this one first and never looked at the other two. It takes a time or two to get used to the way it works, but work it does and quite well. I like the smooth edges. They're so clean that I emptied, then re-assembled some cans and put them back in the pantry as a joke. My wife never caught it even with the light weight (thinking we had been cheated by the manufacturer). Seriously, it works on bent cans, small tomato paste cans and large fruit cans. If there is a downside, it's the slightly increased grip strength this can opener needs, but well within normal adult ability. Apart from the smooth edges, the can opener itself stays clean since nothing ever touches the contents of the can.
Doesn't work on all cans December 16, 2008 cs (Texas) This device fails to open a significant percentage of the cans we try it on. For example, tonight, it failed to open a small (4 oz) can of jalepenos. At first, I thought my wife wasn't using it correctly, but she was. Since we've had it a while and discarded the packaging after a few successful uses, I'm afraid we've wasted our money. At least we still have our conventional openers. Avoid this product.
This is the worst can opener I've ever owned December 12, 2008 Amazing Grayce (Magnolia, TX USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
It is difficult to get the can opener into the correct position on the can. You cannot tell when the cutting circle has been completed. The lid must be pryed off with a knife or now-non-existent fingernails. The $2.00 can openers are better than this one.
