Simplicity is the key here January 6, 2009 Elsa Mora Simplicity is what I appreciate the most in this book. The author went straight to the essence of what making soap is all about and for a beginner like me that exactly what I needed for a good start. With the elements that you learn from this book you can build your basement for soap making and then there are other books that she recommends where you can find more detailed elements...I got the books that she recommended and now I feel that I have a solid understanding of this craft. I cannot wait to start my adventures in soap making.
The Elements of Soap! December 14, 2008 stilljazzed (North East US) My initial goal focused on making soap scented with specific essential oils such as grapefruit and mint. I tried the melt-and-pour method, which was easy, worked well and resulted in decent scented soap. However, the soap was not of the high quality for which I was looking. Setting out to make cold-pressed soap I bought a copy of Watson's book. Anne's Shea Butter Soap is the first soap I attempted and it turned out fantastic! In fact, this is the most luxurious soap I have ever used and am now absolutely hooked on it. I have used this continually for 6+ months and plan to give multi-colored bars as gifts. The book's instructions are both clear and concise, and moreover, I feel that I have been shown the key soap making principles and methodology, enabling me to venture out and make my own soaps. In addition to purchasing the recommended safety equipment, I also purchased inexpensive pH test strips to test the soap pH level over time. What an awesome feeling it is to make your own soap, and this is THE book!
No nonsense kind of book December 11, 2008 L. Hastings (USA) This is a to-the-point kind of book. The author provides you with valuable information, but she only has so many pages to do that with. The information is good, basic information, all that you need to get you started making soap. The Shea butter supreme recipe is quite nice and so are the other recipes offered. Its focus is on the cold process method. What I liked most is that the author made you feel that making the soap is something that can be achieved. She exercises caution but lets you know that you can work with lye without all of the fear.
Smart (and easy!) Soapmaking November 26, 2008 Cheryl Kraus I just finished creating my first batch of soap using this book. I was nervous, but determined, after reading Anne Watson's step-by-step manual to get a batch done before Christmas. I ordered/bought supplies, pre-read and followed the instructions, and was done in about an hour! Ms. Watson's experience shines through this small book, with plenty of Q and A's and tips to help out the most novice of soap-makers (like me). I felt totally in control, followed the easy (yet necessary) precautions, and now have some fun and useful gifts -- and a new skill for making a more natural product.
Best soap making book for beginners November 21, 2008 Cameltribe (Australia) I highly recommend this book to anyone considering making, or is beginning to make, soap. It is clearly written in a comfortable informative style. The book covers equipment you'll need, has diagrams and clear step-by-step instructions for your very first batch. The ingredients are listed in pounds and grams (so you don't have to convert anything). The recipes ALL WORK! There is information on how to make your own recipes, types of moulds to use, make your own moulds, and how to gift wrap your soaps. The references at the back lead you to where to buy soap supplies around the world and further interest soaping websites. There are lots of wonderful practical hints, tips, suggestions and recommendations that other soapmaking books don't include - all those little important things that really matter! And, best of all, you can email the author with any questions you have and she responds promptly and happily! This book is truly the BEST FIRST soapmaking book anyone would want to own- simple, clear, practical, helpful - and everything works! Brilliant!
