Product Description Cleaning your indoor grill has never been so easy since the creation of the IKON removable plate grill. The three non-stick plates (two ribbed, one flat) are dishwasher safe. They lock firmly into place and are removed with the touch of a button. The top plate can be adjusted to six pre-set heights. On the lower settings, this unique patented features reduces the weight pressing upon more delicate foods. The higher settings are ideal for making open melt sandwiches or re-heating. The adjustable tilt feature controls the angle of the grill. An 1,800 watt element allows this grill to heat up very quickly. Another feature is the variable heat control from 350 - 425 degrees so you can make panini's or sear meats. The brushed stainless steel exterior is easy to clean with a soft cloth.Features Include:The nonstick, removable plates are dishwasher safeThe ikon grill has 800-watts of heating power, 20% more than other indoor grillsThree plates are included, one ribbed and one flat

Good while it lasted (5 months!!!) June 19, 2008 Karen Penate (Toronto, Canada) I bought this grill in December of 2007. Because of the Holidays, however, I didn't start to use it until January 2008. Today is June 19th, 2008 and it has stopped working!!!!!!! That means that I now have a $150 hunk of metal sitting on my counter top. If you break it down, I paid $30/month for the privilege of owning this grill - and that is FAR too much!!! While it lasted it was indeed good. But that does not make up for the fact that it just up and died on me. Before this grill I owned a cheap Foreman Grill. Sure I eventually threw it out because I couldn't clean it properly (the plates didn't remove) and it became unsanitary. But seriously it cost me next to nothing and lasted YEARS! I can't help but wonder if the frequent removal of the plates on this grill had something to do with how very little it lasted. I am terribly disappointed! Even more so because I can not find my receipt so I can't even get it exchanged. But that's my fault - not Breville's. Either way I'm horrified at how fragile this VERY expensive grill turned out to be!
Far exceeded expectations regarldless of the great reviews. June 18, 2008 A. Bert Rountree (Dallas, TX United States) I know the title may sound strange but the great reviews set high expectations. The BGR400XL easily exceeded those expectations. This grill has performed wonderfully. It has a solid build and a commercial/professional look and feel that I tend to prefer. The plates are easy to remove and replace with a solid "snap". It's a bonus that they are dishwasher safe. I would compare this grill to a fixed plate model anytime. Perhaps it's the 1800 Watts that drives the heat so efficiently into the plates. Bottom line, this grill is more than hot enough to sear meats and heat sandwiches thoroughly. Though it comes with a flat plate I have not used or needed it yet. The ribbed plates work perfectly. I've made at least a dozen panini in the short time I've had it. The bread toasts perfectly, the contents of the sandwiches are hot, and the cheese is melted throughout. One point to make is that I use hearty or artisan breads, e.g. a French Miche from Panera Bread. I haven't tried to use Wonderbread or something similar so I cannot accurately speak to how well it will work under those circumstances. I imagine it will work fine if one doesn't try to build a Dagwood between to minuscule slices of tender white bread and expect to heat it throughout without somehow ruining the bread. In closing, I would not only recommend this grill, I would buy it for family or friends.
Fancy rubbish May 17, 2008 j-factor (San Francisco, CA USA) 1 out of 8 found this review helpful
I don't usually write reviews but this product makes me angry. I started off a few years ago with a tiny Foreman grill from Macy's sale and on my way home got a steak that cost more than the grill. I fell in love with it - but it was cheap, small and not a fancy design. So I went on the hunt with a you get what you pay for attitude and a good budget. Reading tons of reviews everywhere I ended up with this Breville. It looks nice and has some clever design features. However, the first I got did not heat up enough to make the ready lamp turn on. I swapped it and had slightly more luck. However, this thing is still garbage compared to my old cheap Foreman. It is completely unusable but on the highest setting and that is not good enough to sear a steak properly. Instead of nice browning with a rare center this thing turns good filets int slow-cooked chunks of meat. I really wanted it to work and did not remotely consider this could be inferior to a product costing TEN TIMES less. I am now stuck with it feeling stupid to spend this money and using the cheapo grill instead. Maybe I eBay it but I am worried whoever wins this piece of junk rips my feedback to shreds...
product looks nice and solid May 15, 2008 Scarlett (USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've only used it twice since i purchased this. However, so far so good. I was very impressed when i pulled this out of the box - the stainless steel finish, the weight, everything, just made me feel like i own a very high quality, product. I'm glad i went with this, spent a little extra money than buying a lesser brand. Other than that, it seared my fish excellently and made a great focossia sandwich!
Great grill! May 8, 2008 L. Sanchez (Albuquerque, NM United States) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
After having tried and returned a George Foreman grill with removable grill plates, I was leery about this grill. The George Foreman grill didn't get anywhere close to hot enough to sear meats. I read in the negative reviews (of the George Foreman grill) that this was in part due to the removable grill plates. My concerns about removable grill plates all went away once I cooked on this grill. It is an awesome grill that sears very well. It actually got a little too hot, so I turned it down. Sorry George. This grill beats yours hands down! My reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is that I wish it were a little larger. Other than that, it's perfect! ***Update*** After having used this grill for about 2 months, I've had to return it twice for the same reason. The top grill plate falls off very easily when closing the grill. This is VERY dangerous, as you can imagine. I thought that I got unlucky with the first unit I received, until the second one started doing the same thing. I'm hoping that the third one works better. If not, I'll be returning it for a full refund. The grill cooks great but because of this flaw, I wish I could change my rating to 1 or 2 stars.
