Bad tasting coffee! Burnt metal taste and takes 2x as much coffee to get same strength as my old Mr Coffee maker! January 4, 2009 Scout (Eagan, MN USA) I was really excited about this coffee maker after my old Mr Coffee maker went bad and I had to push the start button every 30 seconds. I have a Caribou Coffee in my building (Obsidian dark roast rocks!) and was used to making pretty close to that quality coffee at home with my Mr Coffee. I was hoping for the same with this Quisinart, and I even ordered the Gold Filter too! Well, here's the short summary: I was completely dissatisfied with the brew. Weak, burnt, metal tasting. I ditched the gold filter right away thinking it contributed to the metal taste. I tried everything, but it still took twice as much coffee as I was used to (almost 2 tablespoons per cup) to make it not taste like water, and even then it had a burnt metal taste. I never figured out why it had the taste it did, but it seemed like the material of the carafe may have contributed to the bad taste since the smell of it kind of tasted like the flavor of the coffee. I finally just returned it to Bed Bath Beyond--If you feel you have to try this coffee maker, get it from there since they have a great return policy--no questions asked even after I used it for close to 6 months. Everything else about this coffee maker is just like the other reviews say, even the 5 star reviews, but at the end of the day, it's the taste of the coffee that matters and not anything else. I'm back on the hunt to replace my thermal Mr Coffee that had to go and die on me.
Great Coffee Maker January 1, 2009 mizpah0319 (Schoharie, NY) I bought this as a Christmas gift for my mom. She had been brewing coffee and then tranferring it to a carafe. This machine makes it so nice for her. She did run just water through it the first time and then it took 2 or 3 brews for it to really be broken in. The coffee is HOT, stays HOT, and even though my Mom hasn't changed the type of coffee she uses, I think it tastes better when brewed in this machine. I'm very pleased with this purchase.
Filter Basket not to go in the Dishwasher!! December 28, 2008 Lawrence Penna (NY) Actually, we like the coffee maker. We like the carafe style that doesn't consume power once the coffee is made. But problem #1: With the paper filters, it leaked all over the counter. With the gold-screen filter basket (not included), it worked OK. Problem #2 The filter basket holder came apart in the dishwasher. Called Cuisinart at 800-726-0190. They said it is not warrantied because it is not supposed to be cleaned in the dishwasher. We purchased a replacement for $12.
Spillage December 26, 2008 K. Marshall (Reno, NV) I've read all the reviews and suggestions about spillage problems and have tried every one, but still I get coffee "splooge" all over my counter. I never make more than 8 cups, I don't over-grind or over-fill the coffee. I have the cap clean and screwed on right and I still get coffee all over my counter. Not nice to wake up to! I'm giving this one away. It's nice to have a carafe that keeps coffee warm, but this machine is too fussy to be worth it. I'm buying a standard coffeemaker from Braun.
Tried and didn't like it. December 21, 2008 D. Whitman (Texas) I found this to be poorly manufactured. Swinging brew basket didn't stay shut. Overall it's just a model that "gets by" and costs more.
