2 out of 5 stars Makes good coffee but...   January 4, 2009
    kzipperer (Duluth, GA USA)
Good: It makes good coffee and it's hot. It makes coffee quickly. We've had the coffee maker for 6 months and it still works most of the time; see below.

Bad: The clock and programming are hard to set/use. We finally gave up and just plug in the coffee maker and push the power button when we want to use it and then unplug it after 2 hours -- which is the default turn off time. The lid cannot be separated from the carafe -- therefore, it never goes in the dishwasher. The carafe drips. Sometimes the drips are more like a stream aimed anywhere but a coffee mug. My husband poured coffee on his Blackberry over a foot away from his mug. (He was aiming for the mug.) My son dripped hot coffee onto his bare feet. There are always coffee drips on the counter. One day, right before Christmas, with a house full of company, the coffee maker refused to drip coffee into the carafe. However, when I removed the carafe, the coffeemaker was perfectly happy to drip coffee on the hot plate and counter. The next day, the coffeemaker decided to make coffee in the carafe.

I'm currently searching for a new coffeemaker. It won't be a Krups.

1 out of 5 stars Use At Your Own Risk........   December 23, 2008

I bought a Krups FME2-14 2 days ago. It went back today. Yes it looks good, the listed features are nice. I enjoy coffee. I buy whole beans use filtered water, pre heat the carafe etc..I had read the mixed reviews and took a shot. Most of the bad that I had read was true. This unit smells ! I ran 2 pots with just water before using it, then over the next 2 days made 4 pots. I continued to smell like melting plastic. Coffee was not hot enough and came out weak even though I was using the same measurements as with my previous unit, a Capresso that died after 12 years of good use. The programming takes a little more thought than most and the manual is not well written. Those items aside, my main concern is that this unit is a potential fire hazard. I had programmed it per the instructions, ran the clear water through it and shut it off. The buttons are on the base. The Auto On takes only a tap of the button to set it and it can very easily be overlooked. A child trying to reach the counter or items placed on the counter that bump up against the auto on can easily turn it on. That would not be a problem if the unit was set up so that it won't turn on if there is not water in the reservoir or a carafe in place. This is not the case. The morning after I bought it I heard the 2 series of 3 beeps telling me that the coffee was ready. Problem is, it was not set up for auto on operation. Most newer pots will not turn on if there is no water in the reservoir. This unit will turn on, and then shut off but, not until the hot plate has reached full temperature! So, imagine you set a plastic bag on the counter at night and it hits and turns on the auto on button ( note that once Auto On is set, it will turn on at the same time every day with no further input from you ) Now suppose you are tired and that bag or paper or what ever reains in contact with the hot plate. Now you have a potential for fire or burned childrens hands etc. I have seen too many homes burned by faulty auto on coffee pots and this should be off the market.

1 out of 5 stars Not happy with this coffeemaker   December 22, 2008
Scrabble Rouser (Dallas, TX United States)
We purchased this to replace a similar coffeemaker, made by Krups that we had for around five years. The programming functions were "touchy" from the start, so we usually did not use them. The water reservoir scale occasionally did not fill with bubbles (meaning: it usually did, rendering it unreadable). After 10 months, it made a rude buzzing noise, then refused to brew coffee or do anything else except flash a blue light under the left half of its display (we read all of the instructions multiple times, tried every possible fix, to no avail). Krups used to make stylish and elegant coffeemakers that were fairly durable. I can't believe I bought this lousy thing. Never again.

5 out of 5 stars Not the older model, but still the best out there   December 21, 2008
    Barb (Alexandria, VA)
We got the older version of this coffee maker as a wedding present. It died in September 2008 after 13 years! We wanted something as close to it as possible...old habits die hard! I went on a search. I read bad reviews of this current Krups model (like those 1 star reviews on Amazon) so I opted to stay clear of this Krups. I got a Cuisinart and it started acting up within 2 weeks. I brought it back to Bed, Bath & Beyond after resetting the internal computer (unplugging it for an hour) every week and tired of the condensation build up to spill down the back when the lid was opened. Plus the carafe had a plastic lip where it poured which would never let all the liquid to pour out. Terrible design all around. I was worried because 99% of models out there are just like this one! I went back and looked at this Krups model and decided that yes, it was changed slightly, but still the exactly I wanted. The fact that the filter basket comes forward and out is great for cleaning, doesn't cause condensation to drip anywhere and keeps you from accidentally spilling grounds into the pot. The flip up lid for the reservoir is smaller and perfectly placed in the back and has the addition of a water filter. This carafe got a lot of flak (from the one star ratings) because the lid it attached. Although I don't like this feature, it can pop out to be cleaned. Another complaint was that the lid would lift off the top of the carafe when coffee was poured. Well, unless you pour past a 45 degree angle, it doesn't happen. If you're worried about that, all you have to do is put your thumb under the lid's tab by the handle. Your thumb is going right to that spot anyway so it's a no-brainer. All this being said...I wish I had not listened to those who complained about this new Krups model. I bought it (had to special order white since all seems to be changing to black & stainless) and love it!!! We've had it for about two weeks and couldn't be happier. If you liked the older model, you'll like this one. I hope this one lasts for another 13 years!

2 out of 5 stars Dripping Mess   December 14, 2008
    Valerie Knippschild
I love the Krups brand. This is my second maker in 10 years. The first one is in my travel trailer. The elememt does not keep it hot for two hours. It's all good the coffee is gone by then when you share it with the campers. The newest Krups maker we bought at Bed, Bath and Beyond which is just a year old. In May of 2008 I wrote to the customer service department to complain about the Carafe design flaw. It seems when you pour water into the reservoir or coffee into a cup, the lip from the from the carafe drips. I have water all over the back of my counter and coffee that has stained my tile and grout. Krups suggestion I lift the hinged lid or pour slowly and steadliy.... Well we still have a dripping mess, other wise the coffee is grand!
