2 out of 5 stars Broken Grinder   March 15, 2010
M. Mihalovich (Montana)
I purchased this product in November 2009 and the thing worked fine. It does produce static like most other reviewers have stated, and this can cause a mess, but what coffee grinder doesn't. The important thing is that it does produce a consistent grind and it has, that is until last week. Last week the thing just stopped, I was concerned that it might have become jammed up or something, but after cleaning and everything it still doesn't work. I have tried calling their customer service but I am just placed on hold and offered a opportunity to enter my phone number for a call back. So I have emailed them we shall see if they call or email me back. It is supposed to be warrantied for a year.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Grinder   March 11, 2010
Reader 2 (Honolulu, Hawai'i)
This is the second (actually the third) of this model that we have had, this being for work. This is saying something because the on-off switch on the first was of such poor quality that it failed after just a few months (bad design. Had we not liked the way it worked so much (and had not Breville replaced it without a quibble), we would have retreated to another brand/model.
The machine is quiet, can be adjusted for a huge range of grinds, and has a non-stick coffee drawer that is easy to keep clean (as in it "does it itself"). It holds enough beans for many cups of coffee, but is easy to fill, so that if one is a fanatic one can loan only enough for 1-2 cups at a time without being put-upon.
The only discernible flaw is that one can find it difficult to set the timer to grind just the right amount (it seems almost to have steps rather than to be infinitely variable. However, if you always do the same amount, this is not a problem.

5 out of 5 stars Great quality for a very reasonable price   March 11, 2010
jem (NB, Canada)
Couldn't be happier with this grinder. It is very quiet, provides a nice even grind and the chute empties right into the holder.

The timer and on/off switch have a nice feel and provide very smooth operation. The 10, 20 & 30 second points are indicated, but the dial can be turned smoothly to anything in between and hitting the on/off button overrides the timer at anytime.

Turning the hopper easily adjusts the coarseness setting and since more than half the circumference of the hopper is used, subtle adjustments are easy to make.

The holder for the ground coffee slides in and out of place so easily, it's difficult to misalign it.

Although static has not been an issue for me when grinding smaller portions of coffee (I usually only grind enough for a 12-ounce French press or two), I had a bit of a mess from static when using finer grind settings for longer times (30+ seconds). But that is easily resolved by simply using a damp cloth to pull out the holder and giving the top or the sides a quick wipe if there still seems to be static.

I probably wouldn't have mentioned the holder but it seemed to show up in quite a few reviews so... As others have mentioned, the holder for the grounds is a bit flimsy, but I also agree that this is more surprising than it is a problem. The grinder is otherwise so well-designed, that it makes the holder (especially the lid) not seem up to snuff. But since I don't plan on having any Neanderthals using my grinder, I doubt it will ever be an issue for me.

So, given all the good points, the price and the minor inconvenience of using a damp cloth (not exactly rare in a kitchen) when grinding large amounts of beans - I'm lovin' this grinder.

1 out of 5 stars Pretty and Irritating.   March 9, 2010
Soft Spirit (Chico,CA)
This grinder will not be durability tested in my kitchen. The grounds hopper is flimsy, and each time it is removed or re-inserted additional grounds fall clogging up the area where the container is in a tight fit to begin with.

This creates an un-necessary mess both on the counter as well as inside the coffee grinder.

The over all bad design is irritating enough I will be replacing it shortly.

4 out of 5 stars Finally - A grinder thats grinds fine enough for espresso   March 7, 2010
Jane Doe (AZ & CA)
Tried SEVERAL grinders before this one - returned them all. Was trying to stay within a budget but I figure this one will pay for itself buying quality Costco beans instead of Starbucks. Agree with reviewer about the timer - the only reason I did not give 5 stars. Good looking machine as well.
