4 out of 5 stars Great product   August 29, 2008
P. R. Foltz (Doylestown, PA USA)
We have had this coffee maker now for about 3 months, and are generally very satisfied. It is full-featured, with an intuitive interface with easy directions next to buttons and knobs - so you can figure it out without cracking open the manual (when all else fails....read the manual!). The hot-plate keeps the coffee nice and hot after the drip function completes.
The only 2 complaints I have are that there is no battery backup to keep the clock going during a power outage or unplugging - and the biggest annoyance (for me) is the carafe has a hinged lid that does not come off. This forces you to wash the carafe by hand, since the hinged lid makes it an ungainly fit for the dishwasher. This is the only reason I did not rate this product a 5.

4 out of 5 stars Quality Machine, Great Coffee   August 24, 2008

I've had this coffeemaker for 3 years. It makes the best coffee of any pot I've owned. The construction is sturdy and it's got lots of extras that really make it worth the already low price... Auto shut-off, brew strength selector, programmable, beeps when coffee's ready, warmer plate temperature selector, clock. The design is very stylish and looks great on the countertop. My only complaint is that the clock, while it is technically digital, uses 'hands' instead of a number display. Overall though, it's a wonderful machine.

This coffeemaker seemed great when we bought it... programmable, offers the ability to pick up the carafe mid-brew to pour a cup and then replace to continue the brewing, etc.

I initially did not like that you cannot get down into the water reservoir with your hands and a rag to clean it out really well, but figured, hey, it's got lots of perks and a decent price point.

HORRIBLE.
The first thing to go was the pause-and-pour feature. We got to enjoy that for about a week. Within two weeks, if you took the carafe away mid-brew, coffee would continue shooting out of the basket. I shrugged and said, that's too bad, but OK.

Within a month, the handle began slightly separating from the carafe... the base of the handle, afterall, is NOT anchored to the carafe as most models are. It is ONLY attached via the neck of the carafe.

We figure since it's a 12-cup carafe and maker, we should be able to brew 12-cups at a time without concern, right?? NOPE. Doing so only TWICE put so much extra pressure on the seal where the black plastic handle/spout meets the carafe's neck that we got a leak... and now EVERY TIME we make a pot and pour the water into the reservoir (even if we're only making a tiny 4-cup pot), the water collects between the black plastic spout/handle and the glass carafe and slowly drips down the side of the carafe. As soon as you turn your carafe upright again, no matter how slowly, how quickly, how carefully, etc, about 8 oz. worth of water that collected between the glass and plastic SHOOTS down the back of of the carafe from under the base of the handle.

Does this sound like something you want to put $45 toward?

Save your money and invest in something better than this junker.

1 out of 5 stars Stay Far Away   July 5, 2008

I guess if I had to sum up one phrase for this series of cofffee makers from Mr. C is "Abysmal".

Why the FTC hasn't brought them to court over this design is beyong me. All one needs to do is look on Amazon at the reviews and the only good ones you'll see are people who reviewed them after a handful of pots. Had reviews come from those who owned for a year or more (IF they lasted that long) you'd see a far different story.

First, the thing is a fire hazard. I realize thats a strong accusation and I don't make it lightly. Of the 3 (yes, three...I'm a sucker) all had an issue where the water leaked into the switch and/or element area causing it to short out. It will also leak through the hotplate seams into the lower area where the electrical components are. While Mr. Coffee claims the warranty their product, the hoops you have to jump through make it not worth the effort.

Keep in mind this applies to this series of coffee makers only (you can tell by the similar designs). I've owned other M.C. products that were fine. unfortunately corporate suits care more about losing money on short term warranty issues than keeping satisfied customers or making a quality product. This product shows exactly why we in the US are losing all our business to china. We SUCK at making hard-goods. Period.

5 out of 5 stars Bought it as a Gift   June 10, 2008

I bought this for my mom and she loves it. It not only makes 12 cups (she is an avid coffee drinker) is is very stylish. It is a great product for the cost.
