A colander drains hot and cold foods efficiently, yet also serves as a piece that looks attractive filled with fresh fruit, sitting on a counter. This colander is stainless steel--which always boasts the look of a professional kitchen. Its drain holes are in circular designs around the bowl and the bottom of the colander, and it's easy to maneuver, with black plastic handles located on two sides. The manufacturer claims the colander is dishwasher-safe, but does caution that over time the harsh environment of a dishwasher may dull the stainless-steel shine. --Teresa Simanton

This strainer is made of very heavy metal. It is sturdy, and is not prone to getting dinged up. For me these are valuable tools in straining water off of pasta, and washing vegetables and fruits. No kitchen should be without!
