Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Review
Many associate Ginsu knives with the product's kitschy infomercial from the `70s that begins with a karate kick to a watermelon and proceeds with a demo of these knives cutting through just about anything in the house. Like the original product, Ginsu's International Traditions is designed for the home cook who is not attuned to the maintenance required of a more high-end knife. However, this line is an improvement on the original, offering the weight, balance, and style of a commercial-quality knife, while meeting current design trends and performance expectations.

This 6-piece steak knife set belongs on the table when serving any meaty meal, from steak to chicken. Blades are constructed from stainless steel and feature a two-dimensional serrated edge that is symmetrically-cut on either side for more accurate slicing and for either right- or left-handed use. Edges are still as low-maintenance as ever and never require sharpening. The blades do not have full tangs but are instead encased in a strip of bakelite, which is sandwiched within a brushed stainless-steel handle. The steel handle provides some of the weight of the missing tang and a sleek, modern style. Ginsu covers these International Traditions knives under a limited lifetime warranty, and recommends manual cleaning with hot, soapy water to keep them in top shape. --Cristina Vaamonde

3 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for   September 19, 2008
Lotus (Peoria, IL)
Cheap set of knives. Worked fine for about a year or so (have had them for about 3 years), and are now very dull - even though they are supposed to never need sharpening. The good - they are still a nice silver color (I wash them by hand or they spot - could be my dishwasher) and solidly constructed - heavy. They also work okay for use with an individual steak or chop on your plate - with a little more pressure than should be required. The bad - they can't cut a tomato into nice slices anymore!!! I was hoping they would have stayed sharper longer - but they didn't. They look decent in their block on the counter. Would I buy them again - yes - if I didn't want to spend a lot of money and needed something that would look and feel decent .... but I'd buy a good knife (singular) for the important slicing jobs.

5 out of 5 stars You won't be disappointed   August 4, 2008

I bought a dozen of these mostly on previous experience with Ginsu. New and improved over the previous generation, highly recommended. I know from shopping around you could certainly spend a lot more, but I doubt you would get a better knife. Cuts like butter, nice heftiness to the knife. Havn't gotten any rust going through the dishwasher. No question, best value out there.

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad knife set for cheap, but has a rust problem   July 16, 2008

I originally purchased these knives because of their low price and relatively respectable product name. However, I found that after only a few uses, they developed rust spots. I hand-wash these knives and let them dry in a rack with the rest of my silverware, which I've never had a rust problem with.
The knives are sharp, and decently weighted, but make sure you dry them off after you're finished washing them if you want to preserve them.

I purchased these knives for myself and was not dissapointed. I suggest hand washing instead of dishwasher.
