1 out of 5 stars Not a great mixer   July 5, 2008

It is a shame that Kitchen Aid has allowed its brand name to be licensed to makers of cheap, knockoff gadgets. If only they would translate their excellent American made brand of commercial quality mixers to their licensed brand of poorly-designed and non-functional gadgets which are neither inexpensive nor U.S.-made. In fact their kitchen gadgets are not even made by Kitchen Aid at all, but the brand is sold under license through a foreign importer.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than OXO   June 28, 2008

I had the OXO and was very frustrated with it, as the pitting shaft does not clear the hole. The KitchenAid works much better, the pitting shaft goes well beyond, clearing the pit on the majority of attempts.

I did find the latch annoying, but it had no purpose and is easily removed with a screw, so I took is off and threw it out.

Also, another review commented that the pitter has a small hole for the pit. It does but there are actually two plates there, if you remove the top plate then you have a much larger hole available.

Also, I removed the pit catcher, it pops off easily. I usually listen for the pit hitting the sink to know that it has been removed.

One complaint though. The radius of curvature on the pitting shaft does not match the radius of the joint to the shaft. This means that the shaft makes a slight sweeping motion through the cherry and seems to be the main reason why most misses happen.

All though, much better than the OXO

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't work very well!   June 20, 2008

I bought this since I bought a bunch of cherries and was going to make some desserts from the first cherries of the season. The pitter doesn't have the rigidity of a metal tool and many of the pits didn't come out. I ended up having to slice all my cherries by hand and I would say 30% or more of the pits were still in the cherries. I need to find another tool that actually works!

KitchenAid Cherry Pitter - Olive
Kitchen Aid cherry pitter: Very poor. I tried 7 cherries from my trees--average sizes. Not one worked. It kept jamming. Since I have an extremely well supplied shop I decided to enlarge the hole 1/64" inch. Didn't work. Another 64th, and another...I threw it in the trash. I have two hand plunger types and am going to order something faster. // For all of you who are pitting cherries, since a pit can slip thru every once in a while (possibly breaking a tooth), it is a good idea to drop every pit on to ceramic plate first before you place it on a pile of pits. The noise alerts you to it being a pit or a bit of the pulp of the cherry. You can press it too. Ken Young (Inventor of ALP Sandals)

1 out of 5 stars Cannot pit large cherries   August 19, 2007

This can't remove pits from larger (grocery store) cherries. There is a hole to allow the pit through, and it is quite small. I threw mine away.
