Easy Cleaning March 4, 2008 711runner (Denver, CO) In my mind Le Creuset has meant - high maintenance. But I decided to give it try - why not, the price was right. I've been pleasantly surprised. Although you do have to hand clean everything, it's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. The cooking experience has been great too. Everything gets evenly cooked and I believe there is a difference in taste.
25-year owner says, "Looks great, don't trying cooking tho!" January 11, 2008 L. Cheeley (Post Falls, ID United States) 9 out of 13 found this review helpful
I bought these when I married 25 yrs ago. If you like to hang your pans & never use them, these are perfect. If you actually cook in them these have some drawbacks: Yes, the enamel does chip, especially on the top edges where it is most visible. I own the dutch oven in brown, the frying pan in blue, & a small saucepan in brown today, & I had a variety of other pans originally. My saucepan was similar to this one in size, but had a different look, so maybe they have improved it. One piece in my set was a miniature frying pan & the cast iron (all cast as one piece, mind you!) actually broke in two one day when it fell to the floor. LeCreuset, at that time, would sell me a new one for half price instead of replacing it for free as this description states they will do now. I did not buy a new one for half price. Also, the interior will stain on these if burned or if you cook something like huckleberries in them. Food also tends to stick even on the enamel surface, which the frying pan does not have. I was forever soaking the enamel surfaces in bleach & scrubbing them to make them look good again. On my dutch oven & sauce pans the interior was an enamel cream color (although the frying pan was black), so you can imagine the difficulty in keeping those free from stains. Even the exterior bottom surfaces were difficult to keep clean. I found no superior cooking experiences from using these & have now switched to the anodized heavy aluminum pans by Calphalon which do not look as pretty in a picture, but have served me far better than these ever did. I also have tried stainless steel & do not like how food sticks to those either. These require way too much maintenance & pampering along the way if you cook much.
Fragile luxury items December 7, 2007 Van Chinh Ly (Castro Valley, California USA) 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
When I hear "cast iron," I think of heavy rugged cookware that can stop bullets and outlive me. I think of pieces that can withstand pretty much what you throw at them or throw them at. However, with these glamorized cookware with a high price tag, I find that I tend to treat them with more care (e.g. to avoid scratching the beautiful enamel). I don't bang them on the grill as I would with normal cast irons. So one of the defining properties of cast irons is lost to me; it's like cooking with glassware. And here's what really made this a 3 for me: I was showing them off to a friend of mine, he took the saucepan and for some reason part of the enamel came off the edge, exposing the cast iron underneath. The thing still works fine, of course, just like how any other cast iron saucepan would. But I'll be annoyed by that chipped corner for the rest of its life.
Le Creuset 5-pc cookware set November 29, 2007 Edith Gaylord 16 out of 18 found this review helpful
Le Creuset is superior cookware, and I've never had a problem with it. However, this 5-pc set is disturbingly inferior. When the set arrived, the pouring lip on the saucepan had chipped enamel. The enamel chips were in the bottom of the box it was packed in. I contacted Amazon, showed them closeup photos of the chipped lip, and they immediately sent a replacement set. That set had the exact same issue as the first one, indicating a problem in the manufacturing process. Both sets were returned and my account was credited. Amazon told me they would remove this set from their website until they could inspect the other boxes to determine if this was a widespread problem. I have subsequently purchased additional Le Creuset frying pans and a saucepan from Williams-Sonoma and JC Penney, and all pieces were perfect. I don't know if the Amazon sets were seconds or irregulars, but I would not buy this particular set, again. If others have received this set and none of the enamel has chipped off, then perhaps the manufacturing process has been fixed. One thing I have learned from this process: Amazon is an awesome company to deal with. I buy almost everything via the internet (including some groceries), and Amazon stands out as being customer-friendly, easy to deal with and interested in making sure customers are satisfied with their purchases. I have no issues with Amazon, only with the 5-pc Le Creuset cookware set.
Le Creuset Set or Selected Cookware? May 30, 2007 Art (OR USA) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
I had this Le Creuset 5 piece set on order for some time, and then decided that even though the price was great, I would end up with 2 pots that are too small and a skillet that many reviewers don't like (same goes for Le Creuset black enamel pots). I'm happy with my mix of "seasoned" stainless steel/blue steel, and Le Creuset pots and recommend considering a Le Creuset 4 1/4 qt Soup Pot, a 3 1/2 qt Casserole, and a large French oven (7 1/4 qt) -pretty much in that order, along with steel pots/pans as an alternative to using a Le Creuset 5 piece set as a starting point.
