poor design, inferior materials - broke on first use November 15, 2008 George Dennison (Lake Oswego, OR) Broke this the first time I used it and the parmesan wasn't THAT hard. It was mostly moist, not rock hard like most parms. My wife used it and had a hard time turning it because of the rotary design. She showed me the problem. I tried it; first. holding it - didn't work well. Then put it on counter with a 'sticky pad' I use for traction on formica countertops. The grader got traction. I turned it a few times, testing driving it... SNAP, pieces went flying, plastic started fracturing. "It got one star 'cause I couldn't give it zero." Amazon took it back without a quibble, did it online and they paid the postage. Amazon gets five stars for customer service. I looked at a lot of drum and rotary type graders for parmesan, et al cheeses. I gambled on this plastic rotary as the German stainless steel rotary was expensive and I didn't want to gamble on the rotary design. I wondered about inadequate leverage with the rotary motion; I guess my hunch was correct. Most of the drum graders are Chinese made. I have two new conventional graders that are going back to the store. They are Chinese made. The problem is they are MOSTLY stainless steel, not ALL stainless. In both of them, the non-stainless part showed up after the first dishwasher episode. Why waste stainless steel on a utensil and then use regular steel for a bale or stiffener?? It's penny wise and pound foolish. (But "it's cheapa that way!") This steel mixture issue has kept me from getting a drum grader online. Anyone have a recommendation of an all stainless steel drum grader? A drum-type seems to be the only design that will have adequate leverage.
Not easy to use September 24, 2008 Laura I (Andrews AFB, MD United States) I bought this for grating hard cheeses like parmesan. It's nice that it comes with multiple blades, but honestly I've had this for a year and I only ever use one. Maybe the blades aren't sharp enough, I'm not sure, but it's very difficult to grate. You have to get a good bit of leverage and start forcing the thing and after a minute your forearm can get pretty tired. God forbid you want to grate a half cup, it's just impossible. I would recommend getting one with a turning lever.
Breaks easily July 13, 2008 B. Greider (Florence, AL USA) Nice concept. Works very well for a while. I have had mine for about 6 months. It now sits wrapped with duct tape in the fridge.Under the pressure of turning the top to grate you have to apply pressure downward...lots of it...This resulted in a cracked container and a useless grater until duct taped. I still use it, but it's not all it's cracked up to be (yes I went there)
NOT FOR ME July 4, 2008 punkypoptart (Southern California) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
LIKES: * At the extra-discounted price I paid, it was relatively inexpensive. * Mine came with 3 measuring cups, instead of the 2 mentioned in the product description. * Extra blades store inside the Top. DISLIKES: * The Top of the grater is very difficult to turn -- which is my biggest complaint. The shallow notches just aren't sufficient to get a good grip. I tried the grater out on a soft Parmesan -- so I'm guessing that a harder cheese, or chocolate, would be even more difficult. * Cheese (chocolate, etc.) must be cut into 2 small pieces to fit inside the 2 interior sections. * The measuring cups don't nest, requiring more storage space. * Since the grater's not air-tight, you can't store grated or partially-grated cheese in it, unless you place the whole thing into a zip-top bag. * Though the extra blades store inside the Top, you'll end up washing them every time you use the grater since the lower section of the Top touches whatever food you're grating. For the discounted price, it was worth trying this grater out -- I really wanted to love it. Unfortunately, it's going to the thrift shop. Maybe it will be good for someone else, but it's not for me.
Swissmar Rotary Cheese Grater May 29, 2008 Mutts Rule Swissmar Imports Manual Rotary Cheese Grater/Shaver with 2 Measuring Cups This grater is so easy to use and I love that it doesn't make a mess since the cheese is stored in the measuring cup.
