4 out of 5 stars Like this toaster   August 21, 2008

After reading other reviews, I decided to go with this toaster because it is one of the few which had the cool-touch exterior feature. The only problem I have had is when I try to toast a long piece of sourdough bread. I prefer this type of bread to be toasted well and my old toaster actually did a good job there, but it was a regular sized toaster and I had to cut the slices just to fit them in. This toaster on setting of 3.5 to 4, burnt the very edges of the slices. Even on 3, the edges were burnt, but the rest of the toast was perfect. Using regular white bread, the toast is evenly toasted, even toasting 4 slices at a time using a setting of about 2. I'm not much of a bagel toaster and so cannot give an opinion on how this toaster works on this type of bread. Overall, I am satisfied with the Cuisinart, and if I have any further opinion good or bad, I will add it later. The cool touch exterior is definately a plus for me. I am surprised at how many toasters don't have this feature and I would have considered some of the other brands.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this toaster!!   July 25, 2008

My old toaster died...I loved it. It matched my kitchen (white), stayed cool (a must for a klutz!) and had one long opening so I could toast just about anything. Went searching the web, but started with Amazon.com, and never got any farther! Found the Cuisinart, which has all the features of my defunct toaster, and some added ones. I like the back-lit numbers that tell you how quickly your toast will brown (burn!)...makes it look like it has blue eyes. Also makes it easy to remember to unplug it when finished. Besides its charming appearance, it allows you to select toasting two slices or four, and has a button to cancel toasting and a lever that lifts the toast up above the level of the toaster. No more burned fingertips! From a "basics" point of view, it makes darned good toast. Buy it in confidence.

This is a wonderful toaster I needed a 4 slice toaster but didn't have the space for the usual ones but this is a slim one plus you can toast 2 instead of 4 which my husband loves because it saves electricty.

1 out of 5 stars Toast?   June 27, 2008

I cannot believe how horribly this thing performs! After toasting bread or bagels, it catapults them out of the toaster onto the counter.

The bagel feature makes bagels taste like dry toast. They don't maintain the chewy inside like bagels should have.

The number dial for how toasted bread items should be is a fake, cheesy blue digital job.

The energy saver optional 2 slice toast or 4 slice toast is too high maintenance a feature to click on and off every other toast job. I often forget to push the button and am left with bread 1/2 toasted.

The supposed 4 slices of toast option absolutely does not work with bread any wider than general white bread. We use Pepperidge Farms/Arnold/Brownberry whole grain breads and one could never jam 4 slices of bread into this machine.

I went out and bought a $20 toaster today to replace this $60 monstrosity. This toaster was a waste of money.

2 out of 5 stars A step backward   May 27, 2008

I had a single slot Cuisinart toaster for about 10 years before it died (circuit board failure). That toaster was the best toaster I ever had with simple electronic controls that seemed "intelligent" and seemed to make perfect toast every time from bread, bagels, english muffins, waffles, each frozen or not. I was sad to see it go. I was doubly sad to find that they no longer manufacture that toaster so I bought this as a substitute. The controls on this new toaster are mechanical - a selection dial (for toast, bagel, reheat, defrost), push buttons (labeled 4 slice or 2 slice to heat both slots or the front slot only), and a darkness dial. I have several problems with this toaster that leads to my less than enthusiastic evaluation. In general, I find that it is hard to find the "sweet spot" to get consistent browning from this toaster - the toast is either underdone or burnt. The side of the toast that is against the center element is invariably more done than the side facing the outer element. The 2/4 slice option sounds like it should add energy efficiency to the appliance but in the implementation, both sides of the center element light up so only one side of the second slot ends up de-powered. The numbers on the darkness dial are lit up with a blue (LED?) light that casts a too-bright blue glow in our kitchen at night after turning out the lights (may be a feature for those who want a free night light with their toaster but I find it intrusive). If I did not know and love the previous model then perhaps I would not be so sensitive to the weaknesses of this toaster - so your mileage and impression may differ from mine. I am just struck by how much better the toaster from 10 years ago was than this current model. Oh well.
