Made by DeLonghi, the Metropolis two-slice toaster marries stylish retro looks with accurate, versatile function. As sleek and curvy as a 1950s car, the toaster features a variety of setting options and slots wide enough to fit bagels, homemade sourdough, and English muffins. In addition, an extra-high lift lever raises small pieces to a safe grasping height. Self-adjusting bread grips center each slice for consistent results, and a smooth-turning dial adjusts the six browning settings. A defrost function thaws frozen bread before toasting it, and a bagel setting toasts only the cut side of a bagel while simply warming its crust. A cancel button interrupts any setting immediately, and indicator lights help you double-check settings from across the room. Made from durable metal, the toaster's housing is a handsome graphite color with shiny chrome accents. Helpful details include power cord storage, non-slip feet, and a dishwasher-safe crumb tray. A bit of a showpiece, the Metropolis looks good on the counter but, at 7-1/4 by 14 by 8-1/4 inches, it may not be ideal for tiny kitchens. DeLonghi includes a one-year warranty. --Emily Bedard

I bought this toaster at a post-christmas sale so, alas, I cannot return it. The Italians make good looking appliances alright, but the performance is worse than poor. Sometimes it finishes toasting without popping up and just shuts off, resulting in cold toast stuck down in the slots. Often it burns the toast. Pewww. It has a 'defrost' button and a bagel button with no discernable effects. It also has an interrupt button which does not work. But I Must say, those buttons look impressive. Guests see it on my kitchen counter and comment on its classy appearance. I would give it away to one of them but this could damage the friendship. As an aside, I had a roommate once who owned a de longhi space heater, and it died a premature death too. Avoid this toaster and this brand of appliance.

It's new but so far a VERY NICE toaster. Works well, evenly toasts pretty quickly. Nice controls and features. Looks awesome.
