2 out of 5 stars Cautionary Tale & it walks!   August 16, 2008
Roberta D. Kins (Cambridge, VT United States)
Yes, I have owned the Kenwood Rival KM230 for 10 years, which turns out to be the same as the Delonghi 7 qt. Granted that is a good amount of time, but this winter while making a batch of Marshmallows, the balloon whisk sheared apart. Somewhat heartbreaking, as I had to start all over again with the mallows.
I have been trying to replace this part for months. The only place to get this part is in the UK, and with the current exchange rate it will cost $100., including the $$$$ shipping. At that price I started to think about a whole new machine, if the warrenty is 10 years, then what will go wrong next, & when? the day after the whisk arrives?
I have spent too many years in professional kitchens not to buy the best, sturdiest, machine money can buy & I really am not sure after reading all the reviews that this is the one.
I was looking for a replacement when I happened upon the Delonghi & considered purchasing it, & in further research discovered it not only looks like my machine, but takes the same replacement parts.
I am now thinking about the $525. Viking or maybe the Cuisinart.
I would not buy this Delonghi.
O one last thing, it walks across the counter! One day it is going to walk right off onto the floor, that may well be its last day.

5 out of 5 stars Delonghi Mixer is Great   June 3, 2008

I have enjoyed the Delonghi 7 qt mixer for several months and have been very pleased with it's performance and utility. To date I have made a lot of bread, cookies and cakes. I shopped stand mixers in detail and have had no reason to regret my decision to buy the DSM7.

I am very particular about how my kitchen looks and the DSM7 looks modern and complements the other stainless steel equipment that already graced my favorite room. I have not had any of the problems mentioned in other reviews with the coating flaking off of the beater or dough hook, but if I did at this point, I would just buy a new beater or hook. I love this mixer!!! and can not figure why Delonghi does not market it thru the chain kitchen supply stores. The KitchenAid mixer looks like a 1940's toy by comparsion.

3 out of 5 stars Does the job but features are poorly designed   May 9, 2008

I run a small baking business from my home and had outgrown my beloved Kitchenaid, so I decided to give this one a whirl. (I took advantage of a good deal from Costco.com which included lots of extras for the $400 price tag--along with satisfaction guaranteed return policy.)

It didn't take long for me to conclude that this was a silly machine. Yes, it appears strong enough to do lots of things, like mixing multiple batches of pound cake or buttercream, but the design is unbearably shoddy.

1. The power cord is absurdly short--as in, 4 inches. This is supposedly a "safety" feature, but has actually made my kitchen less safe, as I have to use an extension cord to plug it in.
2. The controls for this machine are on the right hand side. For right-handed people like myself, that means you have to put your spatula down, turn the machine off, then pick your spatula back up every time you want to scrape out the bowl. That is annoying when you are working all day with a machine. It made me appreciate the KA with its left-handed controls.
3. The tilting head of the machine is locked and you must turn a lever before you can lift the head. This is another extra step that is aggravating over the course of many hours working with the machine.
4. The metal bowl and mixer oxidize butter and sugar if they are mixed at length. In other words, the butter and sugar turn an unappealing gray color.

I have to wonder whether this machine was ever used in a real test kitchen. Perhaps this features would not bother the occasional user. Personally, I am going to return it and try the 7-qt Cuisinart.

4 out of 5 stars like it   December 11, 2007

I believe I've had this for a year now,I've been mixing dough using 4 cups of water and it has done good. The only complaint I have is,the dough hook falls off to easy and the teflon finish is chipping off . When I got it,it looked like it would be hard to keep clean, but that is not the case at all. I really like the attachments.

1 out of 5 stars Please reconsider purchasing the DSM7   November 26, 2007

I spent a long time researching which mixer was going to be best for me. I really liked the fact that this model had a 7qt bowl. I was impressed with how it performed, but when it broke while making a batch of cookies I was very disappointed. I drove to the nearest Delonghi repair company and they were not able to fix it. I then shipped it to Washington (because Oregon only has one Delonghi service center) and waited to hear from that company. I never heard from them after a month and they said "oh, we forgot to call...Delonghi no longer carries the part (plantetary transmission assembly)we need to fix it. So, if you want it back you need to pay for the shipping." I contacted customer service September 10, 2007 to find out what I could do. I have sent several emails and the last one I received was on October 23, "Thank you for contacting DeLonghi Customer Service. We do apologize for the inconvenience, but it may be up to two weeks because the managers are out at this time in training meetings. As soon as we hear a response from the manager we will contact you. Thank You,DeLonghi Customer Service". I decided to call on my day off November 26 and I'm am currently on hold(30 minutes and counting) as I type this. Also, this model is no longer on Delonghi's website. So, if want a machine that can be repaired and you want customer service - DO NOT BUY this one or buy anything from Delonghi. Oh, I just spoke to someone and they said I need to go through American Express to get my refund. They said that the back order time for that part is confidential and they could not tell me if that part is part of the motor, which has a ten year warranty- what???? Enough said......
