1 out of 5 stars Terrible, Terrible Product   October 11, 2008
    T. M. Kovacik
From the very moment we purchased the spacemaker, we had problems. Primarily, and completely unacceptably, this unit steams condensation to the bottom of the coffee grind resvoir and then drips a nice large puddle onto your countertop everytime you use it. It is a terrible product and the problems occurred immedietly, not over time. Don't purchase this coffee maker.

4 out of 5 stars A little reengineering fixes it   July 6, 2008

This coffeemaker is basically a good product, but as many people have remarked, the filter basket does not adequately catch in place. If it slips forward, the sneak-a-cup feature closes the drip hole and the basket can overflow. Although this hasn't happened to me in actual use, I can easily make the basket slip by bumping the cabinet where it's mounted. This is an egregious design flaw and I can't imagine how B&D could have "engineered" the coffeemaker so poorly.

However, there's an easy fix. Simply cut two quarter-inch strips of duct tape and apply them to the tracks that the basket slides on. That raises the basket a little and causes the catch to hold more securely. If it needs more hold, add another strip. Problem solved!

In addition, mounting the unit was very difficult. I had to buy longer mounting screws as the supplied ones were too short. But once the unit was mounted, the installation was very solid--much better than the rickety older versions.

Having solved these problems, I'm pretty happy with my unit.

2 out of 5 stars so much potential but terrible product   May 27, 2008

Hey other coffee maker companies....Listen up....we love this spacesaving design- actually make a good coffee pot that uses it! We have bought two of these terrible pots just because our kitchen space is so tiny, but we're now officially done. They work for a few months to a year (just long enough for the warranty to end) and then break. We had to duct tape the grounds compartment shut for it not to pop out slightly and make water and grounds go all over our counter underneath. We bothered with that for 3 months and now it simply has no power anymore- won't turn on- just totally dead. This truly is a bad product- find the counter space and buy a different model.

3 out of 5 stars Some flaws, but OK to buy   May 15, 2008

We've owned a Black and Decker Spacemaker since the early 90's, and when it came time to replace it, I was surprised that this was really the only under-the-counter coffee maker that existed. I bought this new model and installed it.
    Getting right to the point:
Pros: Easy to install, keeps the coffee hot and fresh for a long time without burning it, doesn't stain as easily as the old model, makes a decent cup of joe, quiet
Cons: Carafe leaks when pouring coffee (get a paper towel), drip cup sometimes builds up condensation and drips outside the machine, water in fill area doesn't always empty completely after brewing

Overall, the minor design flaws don't overpower the convenience of the additional counter space that the Spacemaker provides.

3 out of 5 stars Mounting nightmare, leaks hot water from the basket.   May 12, 2008

*****UPDATE!**** Helpful hint: Keep a dishtowel under this unit while brewing, or maybe a second coffee pot to catch the leaking water. This is now down to 1 star, because I can't change the star rating for some reason.***** One of Black and Deckers biggest problems is they replace very well made products with totally new designs that don't always work. If I had known they would discontinue the old model odc325, I would have purchased 3 of them and put them in storage. Same goes for the under-the-cabinet toaster oven. A $35 dollar UTC toaster oven can now be found on e-bay for $150. The only reason you buy Black and decker is because of the under the cabinet design. They now make the same countertop toaster oven as everyone else, and not as well made to boot! If they want to change design, they should keep the mounting system the same. People don't mind replacing the coffee maker every 3 or 4 years, but do mind emptying their cabinets out and drilling NEW and MORE holes in their cabinets everytime they need a new one. This coffee maker has a terrible mounting system that requires precise drilling to 1/16th". Most of us are not that handy, so we are forced to guess where we place the template holes inside, so the coffee maker is in the right spot. If you buy this model, and get it mounted, I suggest you buy every spare part they offer, and put them away, because in 2 years, you won't be able to replace anything. Great ideas, bad executions. Black and Decker has gone downhill since Applica bought them out in 1998.
