4 out of 5 stars Easy to use   August 3, 2007

It is easy to use and takes up little counter space. A little behind the times because it comes with a how to VHS.

That's what I got out of this machine before the frother stopped working. You get what you pay for.

I have had my first Melitta MEX 1B for nearly 6 years now. It made coffee house grade (or better!) espresso with no fuss that whole time!
If you are looking for crema you will not find it here, but the coffee is rich and flavorful and is a great base for coffee drinks of all kinds. It does a great job of steaming milk and I can even get froth on my full fat milk!
It finally started throwing steam out the top a couple of months ago. It got so bad I thought it would blow up on me one day and so I stopped using it. (It has a hairline crack around the safety valve.) I thought I would just buy another one but the place I bought it didn't carry it anymore so I bought the cheap Hamilton Beach pump machine. (Don't buy it! The coffee is awful and the machine is cheap!) I took that one back and bought a Mr. Coffee, a simular machine to the Melitta. I couldn't get my hands around the lid and when I went to froth I thought there was a jet plane taking off in my kitchen! So it is going back today and I am elated that I found my wonderful, little machine here at Amazon! I am coming back to Melitta, I know I will get what I am looking for in this machine!

I got my machine and made espresso saturday afternoon and sunday morning. they were good, too. better than starbucks, if i say so myself. then i steamed some milk sunday afternoon and never could get the machine to make espresso again. i even let the machine sit for a day and tried to make only espresso the next evening. it didn't work. i am so very disappointed. but life goes on.

I'm on my second one in 4 years. And I only bought the second one because I dropped the carafe on the floor and broke it. I make two double cappuccinos with it every morning. There's virtually nothing to break on this thing so it basically boils down to price and ergonomics. It's cheap and the valve and cap are easier to turn then the equally cheap Mr Coffee version.

A few tips... Dump all the water out every so often before you fill it. Otherwise, flakes of mineral deposits will make the valve hard to turn and clog the steamer. Throw away the rubber thing on the steamer. It just messes up the frothing. Keep a safety pin handy to unclog the steamer on occasion.
