5 out of 5 stars Expensive, yes, but makes terrific cappucino, latte, and more   June 7, 2008
S. Murch
After researching for months, including test-driving several machines in-store, I finally decided to shell out the big bucks and splurge on this machine. Four weeks into ownership, I couldn't be more pleased with the product, and there has been absolutely zero buyers' remorse.

One button, and it creates a perfect cappucino, latte, or espresso in about 30 seconds.

The in-store rep gave me a very good warning that I should never use oily beans in the grinder, since the grinder would probably clog. Indeed, the product brochure suggests leaving oily beans out in a shallow container, uncovered, for at least 3 hours for the oil to evaporate. (I'd recommend longer than that.) I use either Illy beans or Starbucks House Blend (whole), both of which are rather dry.

What made me settle on this device was the recognition that I almost always drink espresso drinks with some amount of milk in them (e.g., cappucino, latte, etc.); and I didn't want a lengthy multi-step process that involved cleaning multiple containers. If I were cooking for 1 or two, I'd probably have bought a more manual machine. But with 3 school-age young kids, I find I often have very little time in the morning. But with this terrific machine, I can get them all breakfast and make my own drink (and keep the machine clean) and breakfast without any problem in before heading out the door to drive them to school. Great if you're pressed for time.

This unit would be ideal in a small office; we keep ours in a walk-in pantry at home, which is nicely out of the way. It has very intuitive LED instructions, prompts you to rinse the unit at exactly the right time, takes only seconds to warm up, and took only 30 minutes from unloading to enjoying my first drink.

I do agree that an investment in glass-insulated mugs is very worthwhile to go along with this unit. While drinks do come out hot, they are at just the right drinkable heat when they come out and can cool faster. But thermally-insulated glasses were the perfect answer, and I can savor the drink over an hour or more. If you enjoy chai tea lattes as my wife does, be sure to heat or microwave the tea mixture to HOT before mixing in the milk.

5 stars. Great machine.

2 out of 5 stars Bad Customer Service   January 13, 2008

Jura-Capresso 13214 Impressa Z5 Automatic Coffee Center

When it works, the machines makes great coffee. When it does not, you are in for a load of trouble because the manuals are unhelpful, and customer service is a joke. For those of you that think that spending $3,000 - 4,000 on a coffee machine might entitle you to some degree of service, Jura-Capresso will remove the veils from your eyes. The telephone service is slow and closes unexpectedly, and the e-mail and voice-mail options are a joke since the company never responds.

5 out of 5 stars Best coffee have ever had!   January 10, 2008

This machine produces the finest coffee I have ever had. I bought a reconditioned one from www.wholelattelove.com and am very pleased. The machine looks and works like it was brand new. I cannot praise this machine enough. Very easy to use, easy to maintain and the coffee, well, it's amazing. You can NEVER go back to drip makers. All other coffee tastes weak and thin. I am spoiled for life!

2 out of 5 stars Not hot enough   January 2, 2008

We have had the Z5 for a couple of weeks. The Z5 heats the milk to deliver it at about 115 degrees (F) to the cup, at the "high" temperature setting. If you look at the various sites on lattes, etc., they say that 150 to 160 degrees is the norm. One solution is to get the milk going with the little milk/steam lever in normal position, but then, during the milk cycle, move the lever over to "steam only" and insert the bottom of the steam delivery nozzle into the cup. This forces the steam into the milk (like a normal espresso machine process) and moves the needle on the thermometer quickly to 150.

The downside of this is the inconvenience and cleanup. This design is not well thought-out, particularly for a machine at this price. Coffee is supposed to be hot.
