Product Description
The Gaggia MDF grinder was built for the coffee lover who demands ultimate control over the grind quality. This grinder operates exactly like it's commercial cousins its dosing mechanism will drop a measured amount of ground coffee directly into your portafilter handle. With 34 levels of precision indexed fineness control you can grind for espresso to drip to French press. Heavy Duty Motor and Grinding Burrs Gaggia equips the MDF with a commercial strength 120 watt motor coupled with a smooth as silk gear reduction system. This provides tremendous torque and extremely quite operation in contrast to the common high pitched whine commonly associated with other grinders. As you would expect from Gaggia the grinding burrs are the same burrs used in there commercial line - 50 millimeters for maximum grinding durability. You will also notice that there is virtually no static charge buildup that is a common complaint about home grinders. Dosing Grinder Have the same control over the grinding process as the local cafe. The ground coffee container for the dosing section is made of smoked plastic and can hold up to 8 ounces of ground coffee. Each pull of the plastic handle will dispense about 7 grams of coffee from the ground coffee container and directly into your portafilter handle. Use one pull for single shot and two pulls for a double shot. Less mess and more control then other style grinders. Specifications: Housing Material: Thermo-Set Plastic Weight: 10 lbs. 5 out of 5 stars Perfect Grinder   February 25, 2008
Jeramiah L. Olson
I've had this grinder for about two years, purchased about six months after a Gaggia Carezza. Together they create wonderful espresso, lattes, and mochas.

4 out of 5 stars not adaptable   February 23, 2008
Robert J. Bennett (Cincinnati, Ohio USA)
I bought this grinder as part of a total coffee upgrade for my kitchen. Unfortunately, not all the pieces were Gaggia, and the portafilter for my Saeco espresso maker would not fit the doser bracket. The grinder did a fine job with the coffee, but I returned it because I couldn't use it in my kitchen. I would have appreciated knowing before hand that the doser would only hold a specific size espresso portafilter baskets. Buyer beware.

5 out of 5 stars Someone Slap Me For Waiting So Long..!!!   January 12, 2008
Lance J. Miller
After constantly reading that a blade grinder shouldn't be used & waiting because I thought I was making as perfect a grind as any "MDF" grinder I finally received an "MDF" as a gift. Well, I immediately unwrapped it & ran a test grind through (set on number 7) & thought that was to fine so I threw it away. Ran another batch (set @ 6) and used that to make an espresso shot. Boy Oh Boy, was I ever wrong. The shot came out with twice the crema I had ever gotten before, the favor & taste of the espresso was out of this world. It was like I had used a completely different espresso bean. It was so smooth & sweet, without any bitterness.. Now I'm embarrassed that I even bragged to my friends that I could make an espresso as good as any Starbucks. I was totally wrong then, I won't be now, not with this great grinder.. Only negative I've found so far is that it's rather loud but what grinder won't be when its churning out such a fine grind.. Also, keep a paper napkin under it so you can easily catch any loose grounds.

5 out of 5 stars Great grinder = superb espresso   November 6, 2007
Trey Klein (Boston, MA)
I've had my own espresso machines for years, but I could never could get a draw with the same flavor and crema as my favorite coffee shops (Vivace and Cafe Ladro, both in Seattle). Even when I'd buy the same beans they use, it never tasted as good.

All that changed when I purchased this grinder. It took a couple of tries to get the setting perfect (4, right now) and to re-learn how hard to tamp the coffee... but I am now a barista. I get a lovely dark espresso with a beautiful golden crema (with which I can make interesting patterns when I pour the foam).

Since I just grind one double-shot serving at a time, I'm not sure I needed the doser--but it works well and I really like it. Put a paper towel under the unit to pick up the stray grinds dropped when dosing, to clean the foam off of the steam nozzle, and to wipe down anything else when you're done.

My only complaint is that I wish the unit had soft rubber feet to dampen vibration... it would be even quieter! I've been planning to stick some on.

For $199, this appliance is absolutely a bargain for making excellent espresso!
