Very Disappointed September 7, 2008 Sand Dog Dave (San Diego, CA, USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bought the machine based on Krups reputation. The actual machine does not look as good as the pictures (I know, what does?). Stainless steel parts are thin and cheap looking. Plastic is average looking/ average thickness for Chinese made products (meaning it is a bit on the thin side). The machine is fairly easy to operate, which is good because the instructins are not that good. The coffee tastes good, not great, good. Not appreciably better than my old Mr Coffee Espresso Machine and nowhere like Starbucks. Frothed milk is a nightmare; more on this later. My big complaints are the unit's seal and the frothing device. The seal between the water resivoir/heater and the espresso holder was and is loose. I've tried to adjust the gasket, tighten and loosen the screw holding the gasket in place, cleaned the knife-edge, etc., all to little or no avail. Having hot espresso all over the place takes a bit away from the experience. The second problem is the frothing spout. It is a two piece design: a fixed steel line coming from the heating element and an attachable/ detachable nozzle. Easy to clean. Problem is, the nozzle has a tendency to come off when you are frothing/heating milk. This makes a real mess and is a bit hot as well. This happens about 4 of every 5 times I use the machine. Calls to Krups customer service have not resolved the problems. This is by and far the least satisfying small appliance I have bought. It's not super expensive, but for about $150 you should get a well designed and reliable machine. This is not it.
Great machine -- yummy espresso! August 8, 2008 Terri PhD I asked for an espresso machine as a gift and my husband bought me the Krups XP4030. It's fast and easy to use and I love the water tank -- it's removeable and has a large capacity so you can steam away! Great machine for the money.
Bad design July 17, 2008 David Gill (Colorado) The Krups XP4030 is a major disappointment. While it does make excellent espresso it is not capable of adequately frothing milk. I have been making cappuccino every morning since 1993 and have previously owned several steam powered machines and a pump machine that have all been satisfactory and were capable of excellent frothed milk, this machine isn't up to the task. I returned the first one the day after purchasing it and picked up an identical replacement that was only slightly better. After working with the machine daily for 3 months, it still hasn't produced a single adequate cup of cappuccino.
What a piece of junk! July 4, 2008 D. Grossman (Berkeley, CA United States) You get what you pay for, I guess. After buying their $100 combination Coffee/Espresso machine and finding that the Espresso part didn't work well, I ate the $50 extra I paid for that half and bought a $150 XP4030. It was a miserable experience. The instructions were atrocious. The cup seal wasn't good and steam spewed brown water everwhere while brewing. The frothing attachment comes off on its own when it is turned on spewing milk and steam everywhere while bruning my hand. It's basically unsuable and is about to get returned. I've tried 3 times to get this thing to work normally and it's just a nightmare.
Great Espresso and Solving the Clog Problem June 17, 2008 Dr. Z (Washington, DC) For over a year I have been making my daily Americano on my Krups XP4030, and enjoying it. I have two complaints, one is that the steam wand pops off at really bad times, like when I'm using it. It's not a big deal for me, I don't use it often. The other complaint is the portafilter, that stainless steel cup holding the coffee grounds. I use the 2-cup filter, and it clogs very easily. As a result, I can't grind my coffee beans as finely as I would like. A finer grind clogs the portafilter on the very first run. Every other month, however, regardless of the grind, that portafilter clogs up, no espresso comes out and the machine just growls away. And there I am, with a sewing needle, poking out each tiny, microscopic hole, with no Americano, and a big mess in the kitchen. I ordered a second portafilter and now I have two clogged portafilters. Then, a solution hit me. I went to the grocery store and purchased a box of Melita Coffee Filters. Using a pair of scissors, I cut out a few circles sized to fit in the bottom of the portafilter. I wet the paper, placed it inside. I ran hot water through the paper to remove as many of the residual chemicals from it. Then I put my most finely-ground coffee in it and it works like a charm. No clogs, and I get my 18-second pull just fine. Also, as an added bonus, when I knock out the old grounds from the portafilter, the filter paper stays with the it, and I reuse it over and over. In the past month, since I've been using this system, I've used 2 filter paper circles. When my first portafilter clogged irrerparably, I looked to replace the Krups. I sure didn't like the choices out there. The reviews I read led me back to the Krups each time. So, I developed this workaround, and now I can awaken confident that my Americano is only an espresso pull away. Now, if they can only keep the silly steam wand from popping off.... Maybe duct tape...hmmmm....I'll be right back! Home Depot, here I come!
