Amazon.com Review
Pour a scoop of batter on the decorative, nonstick surface of this KrumKake maker, close the lid, and in only 60 seconds a perfect crepe-like cake is ready. Roll the warm cake around the included plastic form, and the cake hardens as it cools into a crisp cone. Children love the cones filled with softened ice cream, and adults will go nuts over fillings of chocolate mousse or whipped cream and fruit. Recipes in the instruction booklet offer Norwegian, Swedish, and German variations on krumkakes, so that cooks can choose between thick or delicate cakes. A numbered dial setting on the unit adjusts temperature to allow the cake color to range from golden to dark brown. Red and green lights indicate readiness, and a quick reheat time means 20 or more six-inch cakes can be cooked in a short amount of time. The unit is easily wiped clean, stores upright to save space, and comes with a one-year warranty against defects. --Ann Bieri

5 out of 5 stars More than just KrumKakes   February 2, 2008

First, let me admit that I don't know what an authentic KrumKake is. I had this item on my wishlist because I wanted to use it to make ice cream cones in the summer. After looking at waffle cone makers and other KrumKake devices, I settled on this one because the pattern was pretty and the size of the circle seemed just about right for a reasonably sized ice cream cone. When I got it for Christmas, I tried making cones and formed cups using the included recipe for German cookies. The cones were indeed a good size -- not super-sized cones, but a reasonable size for a sensible dessert. And the recipe was quite tasty.
Then, I got the idea that the cookies would make interesting fortune cookies -- a little larger than normal, and with a pretty pattern instead of the usual flat surface. Using the same recipe, but adding just a little almond extract, I made fortune cookies, and with custom fortunes, they were a big hit at a recent party.
It does take some time to make a big batch of cookies, but once I got the rhythm down, it wasn't so bad. And to be honest, if this thing was baking two cookies at once, it would be a race to get them formed before they cooled. Better to make them one at a time and be able to shape them better.
Overall, I'm pleased with this device. Yes, the cookies aren't always perfect, but home made products aren't always perfect. I'm fine with that.

3 out of 5 stars lights have a mind of their own.   January 6, 2008

It works, it makes good krumkake, but we can't make heads nor tails of what the lights are supposed to be telling us. They seem to have a mind of their own and are no help whatsoever.

5 out of 5 stars Electric Krumkake Iron   December 12, 2007

Traditionalists may not take a liking to this product but with the advent of ceramic topped stoves, to me this is a boon! Once I got the temperature set properly, I zoomed through my cookie making in no time at all! You have to be very careful, though, as the iron gets hot and stays hot (not so with the traditional iron) and I highly recommend this iron to the "modern" krumkake cook!

2 out of 5 stars Krumkake Express??   May 28, 2007

I bought this particular model because the pattern was beautiful, the unit seemed better made then others, and the cookies pictured looked so perfect. Well, after 3 batches and testing every speed from 2 to 6 i could not achieve consistent color of the cookie. Every one of them was randomly patchy, and the higher the temperature went, the worse they would look. They recommend to start at 2 1/2 and go up... but at 2 1/2 it takes exactly 2 1/2 minutes to get a decent golden cookie (still somewaht patchy, but acceptable). 2 is better, but takes probably just as long as stovetop iron ones. I could hardly call it "Express", and "perfect for entertaining", if it takes 3 hours to bake enough for the party, plus every time you serve them you have to explain to people that nothing is wrong with the cookie, it just looks a bit strange. I'm returning the unit and going to try another brand. Too bad, because i did like the overall look of it, as well as the size.

I'm sorry to give it only 2 stars, because manufacturers put a lot of thought in to the design, the fact that it stores upright and there is no bulky handle, just a nice little latch; and the cord storage. For those who bake just for the family it would probably work well.

5 out of 5 stars Krumkake   March 19, 2007

Makes thin krumkaker the way a Norwegian likes them.! The ability to select color intensity is very nice - but you need to know what to look for! Too hot iron will bake thin batter faster than you expect. First time use, pay attention, but then you are set. Very convenient, easy to clean. This iron has become my best friend, since I can serve delicious krumkaker in no time. Well worth the money.
