Product Description
Cook your rice to perfection, and keep it warm and moist for up to 5 hours in this appliance. And, along with the rice, steam veggies, seafood and poultry in the stainless steel steaming trays. This method of cooking seals in flavors, colors, and nutrients, and all without adding fat!

I bought the rice cooker and love it. It does exactly what it promised,it's so easy to use,and for the price, you can't beat the performance of this rice cooker versus cooking on the stove top! I am thinking about buying one for my mom for Christmas.

Ironically, I had a similar problem with the lid, but had not problems reordering a replacement part. I called their 1 800 number and got the lid in about two weeks or so.

We had a Salton rice cooker for about 5 years and the heating element burned a hole right thru the aluminum rice pot. In looking for a new rice cooker we had a few criteria:

A. Needed to have non-stick rice pot
B. Needed to have stainless steel steam-tray(s)
C. Needed 10 cup capacity or greater
D. Needed to look good to go with our stainless steel Crock-pot
E. Needed to be purchased out the door (tax and delivery) for under $50.00
F. Needed to be great at cooking rice!!

I am happy to report that after 3 months of use, this unit does all of the above items very well. The non-stick rice pot works great. The 2 different size SS steam trays work perfectly. It has 10 cup capacity even when using the steaming trays. The SS exterior looks great and is easy to clean. Amazon delivered it for $49.00 and it cooks rice great!!

Now this is our first non-stick rice pot and the manual suggests stirring the rice once it is done. In my opinion this is mandatory. If you don't stir the rice once it is done cooking, then a thin film develops on the bottom layer of rice. This was not noticeable on our old aluminum rice cooker because there was Always a layer of rice stuck to the bottom of the pot that had to be soaked before it could ever be removed (yuck). So if you want to use all the cooked rice in the pot then it is best to stir the rice once it finishes cooking and before you serve it.

Next as far as the other two reviews are concerned my feedback is as follows: on the one directly below, the person states that it isn't even about this model of rice cooker. This person is really reviewing the company and its policies and procedures (helpful) but it is not a review of this model rice cooker and therefore its 2 star rating is not correlated.

On the next review, the lid is designed to be somewhat loose fitting so that the steam can escape. Our old Salton had a hole in the glass lid so the steam could escape. This lid has no hole but has 3 small bumps to allow a small gap between the lid and the rice pot. This is needed to allow the steam to escape or it would not cook properly. Next, the bell works well for us. We can clearly hear it if we are in another room doing something else while the rice is cooking. We hear it about 90% of the time. The nice thing is you're expecting it, so if you don't hear it go off, then you have that little reminder to go and check its status. I never heard our old Salton because it had no bell.

Lastly, the AC plug has a hole in it to remove the plug safely and easily. This may sound silly but many people unplug items by pulling on the electrical cord (and not the molded plastic) which over times damages the cord, this unit has a neat patented hole that makes it very easy and safe to unplug the unit which is great because unplugging them is generally the only way to turn off a rice cooker.

Overall I highly recommend this unit. Only time will tell on how long the non-stick coating holds up but that is true of all products made with non-stick. To extend the life of the non-stick the manufacturer highly recommends hand-washing the rice pot (No Dishwasher). It cleans up so easy that this has not been an issue and is common of most, if not all, non-stick rice pots.

Based on our experience, we really enjoy the Breville RC19XL Gourmet Rice Duo and believe that it deserves 5 stars.

2 out of 5 stars A Nice Try, Breville.   October 3, 2006

I bought a Breville rice cooker some years ago and loved it - it was so much better than cooking rice on the stove top. I liked it so much I bought one for a friend. However, I broke the glass lid of my cooker and, when I tried to buy a replacement lid from Breville, I was told that they were no longer available. So, although the cooker itself still worked, I had to throw it out and buy a new one. So, about 18 months ago I bought another Breville rice cooker. I don't think it was this model but it was similar. This time the cord got cooked in the toastie-maker. When I tried to buy a replacement cord (they are detachable) - guess what I was told by Breville? Those cords are no longer available. So I won't be buying a Breville rice cooker this time, I'm going for a different brand. However, one thing I will say in favour of the Brevilles relates to a comment in the other review - the reviewer mentions the loose lid. I have noticed, from reading the reviews of other brands of rice cookers, that people often mention them boiling over or sputtering. The 2 Brevilles I have had never did that. Not once. I think that might be because of the looseish lid.

The sturdy, stainless steel appearance of this model hides some design flaws. Foremost, the glass lid is ill-fitting on the base pot, providing lots of leeway for steam to escape during cooking. Secondly, the bell mechanism is, frankly, an overrated feature here. The sound produced is far too quiet for it to be practical in a busy kitchen. Despite these two shortcomings, the two stainless steel steaming baskets are very useful, and the Breville RC19XL succeeds best in its most important task: cooking rice to perfection. Overall, a not-too-pricey cost for a modern design and general practicality.
