5 out of 5 stars reliable, quick and convenient Brit inspired appliance   November 20, 2008
The Dawn (Seattle, WA)
After our first trip in Ireland and the UK together and seeing these electric kettles in almost every B&B, my husband and I had to have one for the house as we are both all day tea drinkers. This model from Proctor Silex has held up well for 3 years of daily water boils--usually a dozen times a day or more. It automatically shuts off after the water boils. About half a kettle takes approx 1.5 minutes to boil. I've no complaints about this staple of our kitchen. Besides boiling hot water quickly for beverages or soups, etc it is also handy to boil water in first before adding it to a pot on the stove, cuts down on total cooking time.

1 out of 5 stars The plastic stinks   April 19, 2007

This brand new kettle - after having been cleaned, descaled with vinegar (at Proctor Silex's suggestion), filled with a solution of water and baking soda (at Proctor-Silex's suggestion) reeks of a chemical, plastic smell, which it imparts to any water boiled in it.

We're returning it immediately. Feh.

3 out of 5 stars Do not immerse!   February 10, 2007

Works well (and fast) but if you get the base element wet by immersing or even a few drops of water, the unit fails. Even wiping electrical connection with a damp (not wet)cloth ruins the machine. This aspect of design could be better. Fortunately, it's inexpensive to replace.

Great kettle. Everyone should have one. Both my kids have them in their dorm rooms and are besieged by others wanting to use them to make noodles oatmeal and tea. Very quick to boil, and auto shutoff means not having to babysit it when you are busy doing toher things.

I bought this kettle in February 2006. I liked everything about it until its automatic ON-OFF switch died recently - only two months after the purchase. Now the kettle won't turn on. It wasn't abused in any way, and these kettles usually last for years and years. The last one of similar kind served me well for 12 years until it started to leak and was replaced with this spanking new Proctor Silex K4070.

I wonder if my bad experience with this kettle was unique? Has anyone else had one with a short-lived switch, or was I unlucky?
