KitchenAid's stand mixer is a substantial piece of equipment: 250 watts of mixing power make child's play of creaming butter, kneading dough, and whipping cream. The kid in you will appreciate how quick and easy it is to mix up a batch of cookie dough; the 4-1/2-quart bowl can hold up to 8 cups of flour, which translates into as many as 192 sweet treats. This model comes with three attachments: a flat beater for making batter, meat loaf, and all textures in-between; a wire whip for egg whites, mayonnaise, and more air-infused creations; and a hook for mixing and kneading yeast doughs. All three are solid in construction and easily secured to the beater shaft with a simple twist; untwisting them is a bit trickier because the attachment stems are short and can be hard to grasp, especially if they get the least bit greasy. The bowl itself locks tight to the base. Standing 14 inches high, jutting out a foot, and weighing more than a grown woman's bowling ball, this stand mixer isn't the sort of appliance you'll wipe down and put away. Better to find a square foot of free counter space for easy access; besides, this machine is as pretty as it is rugged--you'll want to show it off. Absolutely amazed by this mixer. It replaces about 6 different appliances that I would normally use and it's easy to clean! The only caveat that I have is that the attachments are SO expensive. Also if you do a lot of dough mixing or heavy duty stuff like that I would recommend buying the Artisan (a step up from this one). Another thing is that none of the attachments made by Kitchen Aid fully gets the stuff on the side of the bowls so occasionally you will have to shut it off...scrape the side and then continue on. Otherwise than that this is a great buy and I recommend it for everyday use.

I got this model for Christmas seven years ago, and I've never loved a present so much! This mixer and my Cuisinart (now twenty years old) have made me Queen of the Kitchen, and I'll take on any recipe whatsoever, knowing I have these two icons standing by.
No, this mixer won't mix huge quantities of bread dough, but it will take on one or two loaves' worth, cold butter and egg whites, warm cream and turn out perfect results every single time. What I really love is being able to walk away from it and do something else while it's working its magic.
It fits nicely into the corner appliance garage in my kitchen (the Cuisinart takes up the other half), and I leave it plugged in all the time. All I have to do is slide it out, remove the attachments from the bowl and have at it!
Cleanup is easy, easy, easy. Everything just slides off the attachments, even the whisk, which you can't put in the diswasher. It's basically rinse and go.
I'd say this mixer is more than adequate even for dedicated cooks, and if it's not big or powerful enough, then you have the wrong one. Not the KA's fault. The power and size are just perfect for the average kitchen.

You can't deny that KA makes the best mixers. I love my Classic for most jobs, but when I get to making bread or muffins or some such, the capacity is a problem. i can't put in more than 5 cups of flour or I will burn out the motor. That means no double batches of anything. And even when I stay under 5 cups, the motor really starts to sound labored. I wish I had put the money into a higher-powered motor. I will definitely do that next time, but that will probably be many years from now since KA are made so well.

My mother, grandmother, and aunts have all owned their KitchenAid mixers for over 30 years. Even with frequent use, not one of them has experienced any sort of mechanical problem. So, I was delighted to receive what I thought would be a mixer that would last me a lifetime. My classic appeared to be a workhorse - never straining, reliable. Less than 2 years later, with perhaps monthly use for relatively light-moderate tasks (no breads), my mixer made a few loud sounds and then lost all speeds except stir and 10.
Upon researching, I discovered that Whirlpool changed the materials used to make the mixer when they took over. Initially, gears were made of plastic. Next (I suspect due to complaints), KA advertised "all metal gears" yet held those gears together with a piece of plastic prone to breaking. As of April 2007, some models are reportedly made with all-metal construction; however, KA apparently makes no promises because old stock may still be on shelves.
