Amazon.com Review Heavy, sturdy, and stylish, this tool cuts the top off any size can with ease. It's made of 18/8 stainless steel polished to a mirror finish, with red enamel-like handles, and is dishwasher-safe. The opener's handles are shaped for a firm grip; they're weighty enough to provide control, and they have holes to facilitate hanging on a hook or peg. The opener measures 8-1/2 inches long. KitchenAid says the first year of the opener's lifetime warranty against defects is hassle-free; the company will ship a replacement at no cost and without question if a defect is detected. --Fred Brack

Sorry, but it's just not durable (especially if you open larger cans) November 25, 2008 Andrew J. Riemer (Winsted, MN United States) Let me preface this by saying that my wife and I have a large family, so we probably put more strain on a can opener than the averages Joneses, but this items is simply not worth the space it might occupy in your utensil drawer. We've had three of these (twice replaced at the retailer within the first six months), and have just had to purchase another opener. The cutting blade is stainless, but that did not seem to be the source of the problem. After using it for a few weeks, turning the handle would not turn the gears. It would slip. It seems that some of the other components in the blade/handle assembly are plastic or nylon, and these seem to be what wears out. If you will be using this on only the smallest cans of the thinnest metal, opening only a couple of cans a week, it may suit you well enough. If you rely on a can opener as an everyday kitchen tool, then look long and hard for something better. [The can opener on my Victorinox Centurian pocket knife works better than this Kitchen Aid Can Opener on the largest cans, and that's the only thing I'll use on them until we find a commercial-grade replacement.]
Save Your Money and Go To the Dollar Store October 29, 2008 William Grant Dollar Store can opener performs for 10 years,no problems.Kitchen Aid can opener does not open cans properly, leaves gaps.Save your money and get 2 cheapo Dollar Store openers and your kids will still be using this heirloom quality can opener. No really!
What a piece of junk! October 21, 2008 J. Hughes (Mendocino, CA) Bought this about a year ago. It opened cans for only a couple of months. Now it only opens half the can no matter how many times you go over it. You also have to squeeze super hard to get it to work even that good! I thought Kitchenaid was supposed to be good stuff. Based on my experience with this, I'll be very hesitant to purchase anything with this brand name on it again.
Great for a while then...not so great August 19, 2008 Virginia G. (Macon, GA) When I first began using this can opener, I loved it. But, after several months it seemed to be getting dull & I could turn the knob but it wouldn't cut or even move. I was very surprised that it wasn't more durable. I replaced it with an opener by OXO which has been awesome.
Gets loose and becomes difficult to use July 1, 2008 Jeremy Nuger After using this for about a month, it loosened up and now there is a lot of play on the opening mechanism. There's no way to tighten it. It's really difficult to get it to grab onto anything to open (it can still be done, but it's not easy).
