5 out of 5 stars Spuds n' Garlic (And popping corn experience)   August 25, 2008
Unhappy Camper
This is the first microwave steamer I've tried that works really, really well. As with all other microwave cooking, one has to adjust recipe timing to the wattage of the microwave, and water has to be measured carefully - a good kitchen scale, measuring cup, and calculator are essential microwave accessories. That being said, it does a dynamite job on steaming whole potatoes - and the other day on a whim I threw in a handful of unpeeled fresh garlic cloves with the potatoes. The garlic came out with the nutty mild flavor and soft texture of absolutely perfectly roasted garlic, without the usual fuss.

With regard to popcorn, this gizmo works well within limits, and probably only with carousel type ovens* - fill with kernels only flush with the edge of the bottom cone and stop cooking after 2 minutes** on high or when the popped kernels reach the lid - not a second longer! REMOVE the popped kernels from the steamer and from the oven - you can nuke the remaining 'orphans' an additional 2 minutes** to get a pretty good total yield - but the 'rerun' batch of kernels will be a bit smaller, chewier and more well-done than the first run. Do not try to nuke any remaining orphans a third time - they will scorch and burn.

* With the benefit of many, many tests, I've found it best to place the steamer off-center on the rotating carousel before popping corn - the eccentric position (and moving hot spots in the kernel pile?) seem to help 'stir' the kernels - as long as they keep moving (a lot!), the popped kernels scorch much less readily.

**This is for a 1200 watt Kenmore - your time may need to be adjusted.

4 out of 5 stars Good product   August 17, 2008

Useful gadget, especially for young cooks. Easy to use and clean, less messy than traditional stove-top pan.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for veggies   July 3, 2008

I love this steamer for my veggies! It didn't do such a hot job with my rice, but I only tried that once, so it was probably something I could have adjusted (more water or something). I've used and loved it for broccoli, carrots, asparagus, cabbage, etc. I use it way more often than my expensive stovetop steaming pot!

5 out of 5 stars Surprised at how much I've ended up using this!   May 4, 2008

I read the reviews and decided against getting this, despite how much some reviewers liked it. But last summer when I saw it in a silent auction and realized that I could get it for a $1 bid, I couldn't resist. Best dollar I ever spent...this rice cooker actually works, and very well at that. The rice it makes, parboiled, white or brown, has all turned out great. The only time I had any sort of mess was when I did the maximum amount of brown rice, and then it was no big deal to clean up. This makes it so easy to pick up a Chinese entrée at our grocery store, and come home to make the rice in the microwave -- we save money by making our own rice and it couldn't be easier to get it done using this cooker. The negative reviews here chased me away for a while; I'm so glad I had a price I couldn't resist so I could "discover" this product.

4 out of 5 stars Since I use this every day ....   April 29, 2008

I am concerned about the presence of BPA in the container. BPA is used to make clear, hard plastics and this is a clear, hard plastic. Does anyone know?

I use the cooker to steam vegetables every day and it's invaluable. Yellow and orange vegetables do stain the basket insert very quickly and the stain isn't removable, at least not with any cleaner I'd want to use on a food container. My last Joyce Chen lasted three years of daily use before it developed a fine crack in the base and leaked water. I'll be happy if this one lasts the same time. I just need to resolve the nagging question of BPA.
