5 out of 5 stars The 1-stars must have gotten the rare defective products.   July 30, 2008

I've used my grill at least 400 times in the past year, and it's never once even wavered, performing perfectly and powerfully every time, heating up to useability in 2-3 minutes. Zero complaints whatsoever.

4 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for...   July 12, 2008

This grill was just what I was looking for. Large enough for a family of four, removable plates for easy cleanup, high power for searing and lower settings for sandwiches etc, and tilt-able for fat drainage and flat to prevent cheese from running out of a sandwich. There is clearly a lot of thought put into the design including a place to store the chord, the design of the plug, and how the grease/fat drip pan is designed. The down side of being big enough for four is that it is bulky to store (the handle does not move so it makes a strange shape for a cabinet). I have cooked steaks, chicken, fish and the fat drainage and temperatures were perfect. We do grilled sandwiches frequently and they too work great. The only surprise/warning I would like to give is that the instructions state that it will "smoke" when first used and that this is normal. Well, they mean it. Chemically smell and smoke. Maybe burn it in outside the first time or at least have the windows open. After the first time it works great.

My husband is the cook in our family, but I'm the fast typist, so I'm writing this for both of us. We've had our Breville BGR400XL Ikon grill for 3 days, and my husband hasn't stopped thinking of new things to try with it. I'd say he's in love. It's a pleasure to use and so far we know it makes beautiful sandwich wraps, lamb, chicken breasts and vegetables (such as onions, peppers and broccoli). He wishes he'd known about this years ago, where he always used grill pans instead. It's good looking too, so we leave it out next to the cooktop. I do the clean-up, and the grilled-on food is easily removable. However the grill ups/downs are square-ish instead of rounded, so to make sure there isn't anything left in the 90 degree angles, I'm going to start soaking the grill plates a few minutes before washing, and I expect that'll make it a breeze. Besides this being a total win product, Breville's customer service is impressive. When researching before purchase, my husband spoke to a woman who actually knew several of their products from personal experience, or at least where she had actually put her hands on the product, not just seen its description and photo in a book. What's also nice - you get a person immediately, not a phone tree and long wait time. Bottom line, we're so glad we found this grill and will be recommending it to our friends who we know also appreciate fine tools.

1 out of 5 stars Good while it lasted (5 months!!!)   June 19, 2008

I bought this grill in December of 2007. Because of the Holidays, however, I didn't start to use it until January 2008. Today is June 19th, 2008 and it has stopped working!!!!!!!

That means that I now have a $150 hunk of metal sitting on my counter top. If you break it down, I paid $30/month for the privilege of owning this grill - and that is FAR too much!!!

While it lasted it was indeed good. But that does not make up for the fact that it just up and died on me. Before this grill I owned a cheap Foreman Grill. Sure I eventually threw it out because I couldn't clean it properly (the plates didn't remove) and it became unsanitary. But seriously it cost me next to nothing and lasted YEARS!

I can't help but wonder if the frequent removal of the plates on this grill had something to do with how very little it lasted.

I am terribly disappointed! Even more so because I can not find my receipt so I can't even get it exchanged. But that's my fault - not Breville's. Either way I'm horrified at how fragile this VERY expensive grill turned out to be!

5 out of 5 stars Far exceeded expectations regarldless of the great reviews.   June 18, 2008

I know the title may sound strange but the great reviews set high expectations. The BGR400XL easily exceeded those expectations.

This grill has performed wonderfully. It has a solid build and a commercial/professional look and feel that I tend to prefer. The plates are easy to remove and replace with a solid "snap". It's a bonus that they are dishwasher safe.

I would compare this grill to a fixed plate model anytime. Perhaps it's the 1800 Watts that drives the heat so efficiently into the plates. Bottom line, this grill is more than hot enough to sear meats and heat sandwiches thoroughly.

Though it comes with a flat plate I have not used or needed it yet. The ribbed plates work perfectly. I've made at least a dozen panini in the short time I've had it. The bread toasts perfectly, the contents of the sandwiches are hot, and the cheese is melted throughout.

One point to make is that I use hearty or artisan breads, e.g. a French Miche from Panera Bread. I haven't tried to use Wonderbread or something similar so I cannot accurately speak to how well it will work under those circumstances. I imagine it will work fine if one doesn't try to build a Dagwood between to minuscule slices of tender white bread and expect to heat it throughout without somehow ruining the bread.

In closing, I would not only recommend this grill, I would buy it for family or friends.
