A few notes in response October 26, 2008 J. Solterbeck (SF CA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Hi - just wanted to comment on this machine, and particularly the first review that appears for it. I read this review and came very close to heeding its advice, essentially that it is impossible to keep the filters clear and functional. I went ahead and bought one anyway, and have had zero problems with the filters. I actually have other issues with it, but wanted everyone to know the filters have been fine for me. The machine comes with a little tool to unclog the holes, which I have not had to use. I have to say if I had to use that tool more than once every couple months it would really be annoying. It would take a couple minutes to clear all the filter holes, but is entirely doable if in fact your filters became clogged. I have a hunch the person who wrote that long review does not grind their coffee fine enough. I am also fairly scrupulous in keeping my filters clean, I often wash them before the coffee grounds have had time to dry, which I'm thinking helps keep the holes clear. Although many times I've left coffee grounds to dry in the machine overnight, and still no problems. Now a few comments about what I don't love. There is a heated water indicator, and when it goes off, your water is hot enough to make coffee. My experience has been, that hot water indicator often comes back on before I've been able to fill an expresso cup (which is not much liquid!) Seems like it ought to heat more water before priming. Also, the steaming takes a little longer than I would expect for a good machine. My cheapo old steam driven espresso machines made steam faster than this thing does. It also seems to squirt water for 10-20 seconds before it begins to blow steam. The pump also functions weirdly as it makes steam, coming on in short steady bursts. It always made me wonder if it is working properly. At any rate, very nice machine, lots of nice touches, heavy duty construction, and looks beautiful, but seems like the steaming should work a little better for the price. Wouldn't pay full retail for it, but would definitely grab one on sale.
Love my Cafe Roma!!! October 5, 2008 E. A. Ortiz 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this machine 1 year ago, I use it every day and my coffee is flawless every time. Once a month, I let the filter sit in vinegar, wash it with soap and water to prevent clogging and off we go again. I have read some of the bad reviews and never experienced the problems reported. I highly recommend it, it is easy to use, at a good price and reliable.

Beat this product considering it's low cost. It produces a good cup of espresso and is easy enough to clean. We bought one of these for the office and we're lovin it. We haven't had any problems with grinds getting stuck in the filter like other people keep bringing up. In fact I was thinking of buying another one for my house.

I've had my Breville ESP8XL since Christmas 2007. I make espresso quite regularly, although I have stopped making it every day. Any time I got a bad cup it was because of something I did wrong. It takes a little time to learn how to make espresso so if you're getting bad espresso look around on the internet for some advice or talk to someone who knows how to make it. I have never had anything clog that I have made sure to keep clean. Good coffee, good espresso, REQUIRES you keep everything clean! Clean everything within minutes after drinking your espresso. Don't forget the part (hey, I'm not a technician) where the water sprays out. Occasionally grinds will find their way up there and if you let them accumulate you'll have rotten espresso. I've read reviews that say their filters get clogged. Someone mentioned that their grind might be too small. Makes sense. I use a Breville conical burr grinder, and since the espresso machine is also a Breville, the espresso grind should be right for this machine. I've never had a clogging problem. Preheat everything before you make your espresso. I like the looks of the machine, it is easy to clean. I have made lattes for family members, but since I don't corrupt my coffee with additives I don't know how good they were. The recipients claimed they enjoyed what they drank. Well worth the money as far as I'm concerned.
