Cheap and Good October 1, 2008 b_lizard (California) I got this as a birthday present for my husband and, so far, he loves it. We bought it on Sep 28 with the free super saver shipping and it arrived on Sep 30! This is our first espresso machine and it's really cheap for a 15 bar machine. Previously, we were making moka with our Bialetti Brikka which was great but we accidentally burned the handle off :-( As other posters mentioned, there was some water at the base of the water tank and it's so hard to screw the coffee holder in! I hope it will loosen with time. It's pretty easy to install and I don't find the waiting time too long. I put in the coffee and heat it up when my husband wakes up and it's ready before he gets out of his shower. He loves the espresso. The crema is very thick. I've yet to try the steamer (we're out of milk) but I don't think there should be any problems (I hope). Thanks for all the great reviews! One thing funny is that the volume of coffee desired is manual i.e. you turn the knob for coffee and turn it "off" when you think you've had enough ;-p I guess that's why it's so cheap. In a way, it's good cos you can control how thick your espresso is. We use Safeway brand French Roast which is not a very fine grind and it makes us great coffee or espresso. I just fill it almost to the brim of the filter and tamp it lightly. It makes a pretty thick crema so for those people who are not getting crema, maybe your machine is not working. We're using the 2-shot filter for each cup. I guess we like our espresso strong. So the 1-cup will stay put in its holder ;-) I tried to warm the cup on the machine but it doesn't get very warm. Better than nothing I guess...
Saving me plenty at Starbucks! September 30, 2008 Kristina M. Reser-jaynes (Huntsville, AL) I bought this on sale for $99 and LOVE IT! I read mixed reviews but I have been very happy. I love a latte each morning and can't afford daily Starbucks trips. It is easy to brew a double espresso, a breeze to steam a little low fat milk and presto, my morning latte! Easy to clean. Even the cheesy plastic stamper works in a pinch. I think the key is to let it get hot enough, have the right grind of coffee, and always clean the machine immediately. I have had it for a couple weeks and make myself a latte every morning and an occasional afternoon. I can't say enough about how wonderful this little guy is!
Great Product September 30, 2008 Hoboken Mom (New Jersey) Truly makes a great esspresso with plenty of cremma. I was surprised at how authentic the coffee came out. The steamer works well too, with the understanding that you froth twice to get really hot and quality foam (a matter of seconds). Being able to use the ESE pods is also a plus, the machine doesn't need cleaning as often when you use them. Over all perfect for the $100 bucks it cost us.
Perfect Latte's September 28, 2008 DCH (El Cerrito, CA USA) I have had this DeLonghi Espresso maker for 4 months. I didn't expect it to be as perfect as it is. It was a replacement for an old machine, (different make), that broke. The DeLonghi is way better than the machine it replaced. I love my Latté in the morning and set the DeLonghi up on a timer to turn it on at 6:15am so it is ready to brew at 6:30am. A couple of minutes later I have a perfect Latté. The steamer works great, and since I pre-heat my cup with water and steam from the steamer, I clean the steamer that way. The pump makes great frothy coffee, and I have the choice of a single or double shot. I bought a second unit for my daughter in university and she loves hers too. I did buy a tamper since the one on the unit is useless. DeLonghi made a smart choice when they made the water tank removable. I always remove the tank and leave the lid open when the unit is not in use. That way it keeps dry and fresh. If you don't, you risk having mold and other nastiness grow at the bottom of the unit.
Functional September 15, 2008 M. Samuelson (Minnesota) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this item to avoid paying $5 for a cup of coffee every day. This was my first venture into at-home espresso making so I wanted to keep it simple and affordable. I did read reviews of this product before purchasing and that helped in my decision regarding purchasing this model. It is quite easy to use; I have made espresso and steamed milk with it. I was actually quite impressed with the steaming. It works very well and gets the milk hot rather quickly. Sometimes the espresso seems to pump out very slowly. It comes out in drops rather than a straight stream. I have cleaned the pod holder and it doesn't seem to matter. One other issue I have is that pods don't actually work; the espresso comes out watery. To solve this, I open the pods and place the grounds into the pod holder and this works well though it is an extra step. So now I just purchase beans and grind them to save money on the pods. If this is your first espresso machine and you don't want to pay a lot of money, this isn't a bad machine. I will be purchasing a higher quality, more expensive machine in the future.
