Not for the lazy August 2, 2006 J. Christmas (New Brunswick, NJ) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The only reason I deny this ultra-sexy machine a 5th star is that I realize it takes a touch of madness or obsession to really prefer the Europiccola to an easier-to-use semi-automatic machine. But if you're the type who enjoys getting caught up in the irrational rituals of coffee, the Pavoni might be for you. Capable of making to-die-for espresso and lattes, as long as you're willing to take the time and learn its quirks (not to mention the quirks of espresso itself). Keep in mind also that while it looks beautiful on your countertop and will impress your friends, it's not as ideal for guest/party situations as a larger and more automatic machine - 8 shots is optimistic for one use, and the head often needs to cool between shots.
Great design, well engineered. December 22, 2005 P. F. Clothier (Cornwall, UK) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
We had a Briel pump driven machine before the pavoni, which lasted not even 2 years and cost a bit over 100. After that we thought it would be worth paying extra for a Pavoni, and bought one on ebay for 130. As other reviewers on here have said, you need to be a bit committed and persistant to learn to get the espresso right, but it does the job very well and the design and solid feel is fantastic. What I really like in our throw away society is the availability of spare parts. You can replace everything - we did a seal replacement no problem, and replacing the element is easy too apparently. Much better throwing three or four sets of seals over 10 yrs rather than five rubbishy machines into landfill sites.
Horrible Service and Warranty Issues December 19, 2005 D. Gasparetti (Nebraska, USA) 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
Manual machines, without question, produce the best cup of espresso. I have owned them in the past, and recently purchased a brand new La Pavoni. The machine arrived broken. I could not even get one cup of espresso. I called thinking that La Pavoni would have me send back the machine and replace it. WRONG. I was told that this was not allowed, and the only option I had was contact one of there US Service Agents and arrange to have the machine sent to them for repair. Even then they indicated that the repair expense would be my responsibility. At this point what do you do? So either I keep the machine as a useless decoration, or concede and try to fix it. I tried the three numbers they provided. About 10 days have gone by, and I have called each number numerous times to no avail. You never reach a real person. Only a tape recording informing you that they would contact you as quickly as possible. So, yes, a manual machine is the best, but La Pavoni warranty and service is horrible. If you want a manual, try a different vendor. Don
amazing-16 cup review September 4, 2005 David J. Mosley (san pedro, calif.) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
i bought this in Italy in 1998, have used it everyday and it still works like it is brand new. there are a few tricks with it, make sure that you clear the air, using the steam valve before you pull, another trick, grind right, it will make all the difference(burr #5)also make sure that you start it with the handle in the pulled down position(till it warms up, then pull up, then down). would buy another one if mine went bad.....
Very Good Machine, But with many faults. January 1, 2005 L. Sudairy (paso robles, california USA) 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
beautiful machine. But I cannot give it any higher score. It is very nice to use and you can make great tasting espresso with it (with a lot of practice and experimentation) , but it is far from an excellent machine. Here are the faults in my opinion: 1- Machine is not heavy enough. (this is a big problem as you will see with many of the points the follow). 2- securing the coffee into the machine requires some strength which is a problem because of (1) --> the machine will not stay still it will move around. 3- The lever pulling and pushing is needs strength --> this is a problem because of (1) again. 3- the Milk frother is too close to the machine (if you are not careful you will burn yourself a couple of times as I did) Also this makes the frothing process much harder. 4- I do not think that the machine keeps enough pressure to get a froth (not even for one cup) for a latte 5- The reservoir is somewhat small (minor problem) 6- because of (3) the milk will make a mess when frothing. 7- Instructions are vague in some areas such as how you are suppose to be using the double shot espresso. 8- The automatic milk frather attachment worked all right for couple of times, but started to decline in performance. (this could be my fault, but I did not experiment with it enough to tell) I am returning my unit and will be trying the Francis Francis (they were both the same price where I bought this machine from) and I will post a review there about my next machine. I hope this can help some of you out there shopping for an espresso machine. This machine was recommended to me by a good Italian Friend of mine, and he is very picky about his espresso, so this machine must be able to make really good espresso if one did not mind all it's faults and had the time to perfect their espresso making wit it. Layth
