2 out of 5 stars Regretable, inconsequential micro skillet   June 6, 2007

Lodge makes a slew of USA made cast iron products, most of which are quite useful additions to any kitchen, and a very few of which are simply wastes of resources, time and attention. Regretably, this little 5" square skillet falls into the later camp. It's "oh-so-cute", and yet, damned near useless, save for cooking individual eggs or heating a sandwich made from boring, bland SQUARE bread like Wonderbread. Actually, even Wonderbread grilled cheese sandwiches are better made with some other Lodge devices that serve multiple duties, such as any cast iron frying pan over 8" diameter. That leaves this little 5 inch square as being square and basically useless, which it is. Avoid wasting even a dollar on this. The "wonder" in this pan is that it sells at all. I give it 2 stars, rather than one, only because it's made well and made here.

5 out of 5 stars I use it when I'm grilling... every time.   April 7, 2007

Place a good amount of Crisco in the skillet, let it melt down, then set the skillet on the side... on a safe surface. Fold up a couple of paper towels, until it the paper towels fit in the skillet (fold about 4 times, into a square... the size of the skillet).

Then you have a great way to grease up the grates in on your grill.

I stick the "greased-up" paper towels to the bristles on my wire grill brush.

It works great.

Just be carefull if the grease is hot.

Just wipe out any excessive grease, and it'll be ready to use the next time you need it.

5 out of 5 stars great spoon rest   February 26, 2007

Little small for cooking, but what a great item around the stove for utensils or spices. If you have a small burner, might work well for the one egg brekfast

This skillet was already scratched up when I took it out of the box. The coating just peeled right off. I can't even use it. Total waste of money.

This is my 2nd lodge logic product (first being a 12" skillet) and I love it. It just the right size for bread and eggs and for pan frying small quantities. The only minor hassle I see is during cleanup when food in the corners does not come off easily.
