4 out of 5 stars good quality   April 30, 2008

This coffee maker is well built. We bought it becasue of stainless steel the thermo carafe, becasue we have broken a couple of the glass ones :)

At first, I was also having problem figuring out what the water level is and found that if you pour the water from the back (like most of the coffee maker), you would need to close the lid and open the front lid (which opens also the back one) to view the water level on the ruler above the water filter).

We also like the wire filter basket, so we don't need to buy the paper filters. The only complaint I have is the coffee temp not hot enough (around 130 F). I called Customer Service and was told to warm up the carafe with hot water for at least 5 minutes before starting the brew. This works, but it sure is a hassle. Since the carafe is insulated, the hot plate that keeps the coffe hot also is less effective. But, what I d o now is to setup auto brew 20 minutes before hand to brew a 10 cup water. This would keep the carafe wwarm enough to bring the coffee temp up to around 145 F.
Overall, we still believe that this is a good product, easy to use/program and no more broken carafe :)

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointed in this Kitchenaid product !   February 16, 2008

Don't waste your hard earned money on this coffee maker. This item was given a fair test drive since it was purchase back in May 2007.

Pros:
Nice stylish appearance. Love the stainless steel look.
Steel carafe, nothing to break in a clumsy moment.
Steel carafe stays cool to touch.
If you make small quantities of coffee, taste is satisfactory.
Love the gold mesh coffee basket, no more messy paper filters to deal with.
Auto clean light will illuminate to let you know when cleaning is required, due to mineral build up.
Easy to read graduations inside to see water level.
Plastic measuring spoon supplied, to scoop fresh coffee grounds.

Cons:
The coffee maker does not brew enough coffee. 10 cup feature brews really only 2 1/2 mugs - they are normal size.
If you try to brew 10 cups , really anything over 7 cups, you end up with coffee ground spillover, and that is using their suggested coffee ground measurements. Crunchy coffee... Mmm...Delicious - NOT.
The coffee comes out luke warm and needs to be reheated in the microwave before drinking.
There is NO heating element to keep the carafe warm over time.
The carafe had a very deep inset lip and makes it difficult to pour coffee out from carafe.
Must use alternative container to fill water station, carafe too difficult to pour from.
The "minute" setting of the LED time clock broke,(won't pop back out) and can not be adjusted. This occurred after only 3 trials of resetting time, due to power outages.
Overpriced due to lack of quality of product.

1 out of 5 stars JUNK DON'T BUY IT   February 8, 2008
Fair Warning (PA)
This is the biggest piece of junk. I am so mad I got duped into buying KitchenAid and paying $150 for this p.o.s. Luke warm coffee, bad electronics, bad design, fails often, takes up too much space on the counter. KitchenAid you have lost a customer for life.

3 out of 5 stars Good tasting coffee, but...   January 6, 2008

I like this machine "pretty well." The positives are that the coffee tastes great. Also, I like that there is no need to turn the machine off. When it has brewed, the thermal carafe keeps the coffee warm (sometimes for 10+ hours!) without the use of a heating element. I also like the appearance of the machine.

The two drawbacks are: Sometimes, the coffee is hot, sometimes not. This variation is likely due to the water temperature from the tap. For the price of the machine, however, I don't think I should have to pre-warm the carafe with warm water. My other complaint is that the machine gives three loud beeps when the brewing is complete. That is fine if you're awake, but if you have set the coffee maker to brew in the morning in hopes of being awakened by the rich smell of freshly brewed coffee, you are instead awakened by a harsh series of beeps. (There is no way that I have found to turn off the beeps.)

On a side note, initially our coffee tasted metallic from the stainless carafe, but after a couple cycles of brewing vinegar it was neutralized.

3 out of 5 stars Nice coffeemaker, but....   October 15, 2007

I received this coffeemaker as a gift. I really like the ease of the function controls and I like having a thermal carafe. The problem - the coffee isn't hot enough. I end up putting my cup in the microwave for a bit just to get the temp up. According to the instruction book, Kitchenaid recommends that you heat the thermal carafe with hot water before making coffee in order to get a hotter brew. Well, that's great if you're making it right then, however, I like to set up the coffeemaker to come on in the mornings so I don't have to get up and make it which means the carafe will be cold when the coffee is brewing. This, of course, means I don't get coffee as hot as I'd like. Coffee temp aside, this is a really good machine, easy to use controls and coffee tastes really good.
