1 out of 5 stars Get Flood Insurance   April 19, 2008
N. Heffernan (Denver, CO)
I bought this coffee maker approximately 5-6 months ago and had used it almost everyday. After 4-5 times walking into my kitchen first thing in the morning and seeing how most of the coffee was on my counter top staining my grout, instead of the glass carafe, I returned it and gave it a funeral. I gave it a few chances thinking it was user error (not putting carafe in properly), but after so many chances and floods, I gave up. This is a serious design flaw and if it hasn't happened yet, it will soon.

1 out of 5 stars Planned obsolescence   April 18, 2008
seeking sustainability
The person who says the other reviewers are dummies must not have had his coffee maker very long. We bought a kitchenaid thinking it would last a long time. After a year and a half we got an error message. The manual said contact the manufacturer for repairs. Needless to say, the manufacturer said it was too expensive to repair and they'd sell us another one at a discount. No thanks. I have a $15 coffee pot that's 15 years old - i'll go back to that one!

Approach to sustainable life: Acquire stuff that lasts! Who would have thought a KitchenAid wouldn't!

1 out of 5 stars Error messages!!   March 9, 2008
Christopher Busch (Wyoming, MI 49519)
I received this model as a replacement for a recalled model, and I wish I still had the old one, because that one actually worked. For the past four or five months, this coffeemaker has been intermittantly giving me an error code "Err 1". Thats correct, an error code from a motherf***ing coffee maker!! It has finally refused to work at all, giving me the error code every time I try to make coffee. I just marched that turd right out to the trash.

2 out of 5 stars This is a KitchenAid???   February 17, 2008

It's more like a Mr. Coffee, at the price of a KitchenAid. Although, I paid close to $100 for it when it first came out. Now I see the price has dropped dramatically. But it isn't even worth $50 for the aggravation you will go through, people.

I purchased this product due to brand reputation for quality, among other things. This coffeemaker LEAKS at least TWO cups worth of coffee all over the counter, EVERY day! I take umbrage at the reviewer who says those of us having trouble "don't have a clue" "don't know what they're doing" or are "using an older model." My machine is less than a year old, the basket goes in just one way, and I have tried several different positions with the carafe. If it was user error, why would my machine work fine for the first couple of months and suddenly start leaking one day, when I have done nothing different? It's as if a part has melted, bent, or cracked. My guess is, this reviewer hasn't had his machine very long. Just wait, mister!

Typically, I set my machine to auto brew, so now I have to put paper towels under the machine to soak up the coffee before I wake up. And that means I have to brew an extra two cups to account for the spillage. And you can't brew 10 full cups but instead must brew only 8, which yields 6 after overflow ~ otherwise the water gets into the grounds or vice versa. What a pain! If I hadn't just purchased this a few months ago, I'd chuck it. (It's also hard to find a coffee maker under 14" high, since my cabinets have low clearance.) Plus, it leaks from the decanter spout when you pour. NOT a great way to start your day every morning, I have to say! :(

Summation? This machine is a piece of junk. The only reason I gave it two stars instead of one is for the sleekness of the design, but KitchenAid needs to go back to the drawing board on this one. If some machines are lemons and some are not, don't take a chance on getting a lemon. You won't know it until it is too late to return it. Do yourself a favor and buy a Cuisinart instead.

5 out of 5 stars Previous reviewers are dummies!   February 9, 2008

I read the instruction booklet and the KitchenAid KCM511 has performed as advertised. No problems and I'm very pleased with it. I highly recommend the KCM511 coffee maker to anyone looking for a stylish, high quality coffee maker. I suggest previous reviewers learn how to read and follow instructions. Traits that should have been learned in the fourth grade.
