defective door July 30, 2008 Dolina (Warm Springs, VA) Although the toasting function worked well enough, the door developed problems after just two months of use. I will avoid Cuisinart small appliances in the future.
A great toaster oven, finally July 28, 2008 A. Quon (Palo Alto, CA) We shopped around for a toaster oven for a ridiculously long time before finally sticking with this one. Whatever happened to Black and Decker? Their ovens are awful nowadays, I used to have one for 10+ years and it was great. Almost wish I didn't leave it behind in grad school. Briefly, we purchased no less than 4 ovens in the span of a month or two. Black/Decker, T-fal, Oyster, and Kitchen Aid priced from very cheap ($35) to very expensive ($200). We also bought another Cuisinart with electronic controls. We liked this one best because: 1. It toasts regular sliced bread very well and reasonably fast 2. It has analog controls (dials and buttons) rather than over engineered electronic controls 3. The oven is reasonably strong and large enough to cook meats As simple as that list sounds, all of the above units were lacking in one or more of the three. The T-Fal, which got great reviews, was essentially DOA because of faulty electronics. I did get the T-fal to toast up a slice of bread, it made nice toast but it took much longer than this Cuisinart. The B&D basically burnt every other piece of toast we tried because it doesn't have any thermostat to monitor the heat. The Kitchen-Aid, like the T-fal, couldn't make toast within a reasonable amount of time. I think the Kitchen Aid was basically baking the slice of bread rather than toasting it. The other Cuisinart (TOB 165) had membrane buttons with electronic controls that was maddeningly un-ergonomic. The deal-killer being that it didn't remember our last setting for making toast so every time we had click-click-click-click etc to set it every single time. Did they actually have human beings test these things? We've owned it for almost a year and haven't had issues with the door. I consider myself lucky and/or pretty gentle with this thing. I only wish that it would pull out the rack automatically when I open the door (something my old B&D did). But otherwise it's been perfect.
NO-GOOD, Fire Hazard July 23, 2008 D. Sercel (NH) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
My family has owned this toaster for 1.5 years. As of tonight, we don't own a toaster, and we're lucky we still have a kitchen. Yes, the door did not shut after a few months. Yes, it always burned our food on the toast setting. Yes, all of the interior paint was cracked and pealing, possibly indicating poor quality paint or extra hot conditions inside the toaster. Still, I tried to bake 6 cut-and-bake cookies tonight. Without any preheating and prior to the timer going off, I ran to the kitchen only to find it full of smoke and a fire inside the oven. *Note* THE BEST ASPECT OF THIS TOASTER'S DESIGN IS THE PLASTIC HANDLES ON THE SIDE. I was able to hold them and run the thing out of the house, only to have to hose it down on the drive, as the flames began to consume the entire toaster. It baked the cookies to charcoal prior to the given cooking time and much earlier then the first commercial break on the TV program I was viewing at the time. This toaster oven didn't work well at any point in its short life, and it certainly would not have been worth the demise of my kitchen. DON'T DO IT! Buy a better one.
Excellent for its size July 12, 2008 Geezer Geek (Wichita Falls, TX) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We have enjoyed this product for awhile now and certainly have no complaints at all. My wife uses it as an alternative to baking in the oven and it works very well. The only issue is that it is a bit smaller than the toaster/oven that it replaced. It seems that no one makes a large size toaster/oven anymore. That is the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 and that may be an unfair deduction. This is an appliance that we use virtually every day and to this point it has proven to be an excellent value.
Great with some minor annoyances June 30, 2008 Jeff (Boston, MA USA) This is a great product, replacing my cheap black and decker toast-r-oven. It clearly is a much higher end product and hopefully will last much longer (my black and decker conked out in 18 months). Some minor annoyances 1) why is there no indicator light or sound when the oven is preheated to the desired temperature? 2) The knobs are kind of strange- the inner part of it turns but the numbers do not, takes a little getting used to. Other than that, the family really likes it. It's a bit bigger than we expected.
