Outstanding Value July 9, 2008 Hungry Reader (Western Michigan) I usually do not write reviews, but I had to write one for this product. I bought my steamer about a year ago, after my daughter had purchased one and recommended it. I was a little concerned after reading some of the reviews about the drip dish, and modifying the unit to make it more usable, but took the plunge. I love it! The unit is reliable, easy to use, easy to clean, and easy to store. I use it constantly, whether for veges or fish or chicken or steamed dumplings. I do not have any problem with the drip tray, and as I mentioned, I have even cooked a chicken in the unit without any problems. I use it as it came, and have had absolutely no problem with it. (I do have a separate rice steamer from Japan so do not use this steamer for rice). Several years ago I moved, and my old house had had a Miele wall steamer. I was joking with my daughter while I was steaming dinner tonight and remarked that I sure had found some real savings with my Oster over the Miele! Easier to clean, too!! Seriously, I would recommend this product to anyone who likes to steam food.
Great Steamer July 6, 2008 J. McLaughlin I have bought two of the steamers as gifts after using my unit. If you cook a lot of rice you will want a dedicated rice cooker. This machine does a great job of steaming vegetables. Before I buy any product I go to the manufactures site and down load (DL) the owner's manual to get an idea if the product will fill my requirements. I suggest before you buy this unit you also DL the owner's manual.
Cumbersome... July 3, 2008 billytobongas When it comes to steaming the food, it works quite well. The suggested cooking time is pretty accurate and straightforward. Where it loses points for me is what happens after the cooking is done... The steamer is very cumbersome and not very convenient to clean. It's rather awkward and easily susceptible to mold build-up if you don't... can't... clean it well enough, especially in the water reservoir area that can be seen from the outside. I plan to return mine and find something that can be used on the stovetop. The electric steamer can be dangerous with the element of water if you are not careful.
Excellent Vegtable Steamer June 27, 2008 Hank B (Edwardsville, IL United States) Oster 5712 Electronic 2-Tier 6.1-Quart Food Steamer If you enjoy al-dente aparagus and other vegtables this unit makes it simple. Easy view of vegatable colors. Clean up is quick and easy.
excellent food preparer June 25, 2008 Thelma Meyer (Brooklyn, NY) I was a little concerned about cooking in plastic - but I solved that problem! I have some old corningware pans, pyrex would be excellent too - I put the food in those, put them in the steamer - and voila! I've always been "cooking with gas" - but after burning/destroying 2 pots & 2 kettles - electric it is! I am delighted at how easy this is to use. Cooktime is a little longer than gas - I'm experimenting as I go along. But so easy to taste - and reset the timer for additional cooking time. - One concern is keeping enough water in the steamer underneath. That seems to need periodic checking on - the unit turns off if the water level is too low, and then cooking stops. So far I've made cereal, pasta, rice, soup, steamed vegetables. Everything tasted quite good. I'm grateful for all the warnings about not removing the water pan until everything has cooled off - but once cool the unit is very easy to clean. So I am very happy with it - and SO grateful that I can cook without worrying about destroying my beautiful pans (sigh) - and God forbid - even burning the house down!
