5 out of 5 stars So much better than my old rice cooker!   March 12, 2010
H. Carroll (Wabash, IN)
I am extremely pleased with this rice cooker/vegetable steamer. My old one had an aluminum pan, and it always seemed like about half the rice stuck to the bottom. The stainless steel pan on this one is naturally non-stick. I've been using it to cook Zatarain's brown rice mixes. The first time, the rice was a bit chewy, so I just starting adding an extra 1/2 cup of water, and everything comes out fantastic now. I followed the manufacturer's recommendations of always using the steamer tray, even if I'm not cooking any vegetables, and leaving the rice on "warm" for at least 15 minutes before scooping it out. It's taken a bit of experimentation to figure out when to put the different kinds of veggies into the steamer tray in order for everything to come out just right, but I could not be happier. I would highly recommend this rice cooker/food steamer to anyone who is concerned about the plastic in most food steamers and has enough imagination and patience to withstand a bit of trial and error.

4 out of 5 stars Good and safe   March 8, 2010

I like it so much. When I use it to cook the rice, I feel it is safe for my family's health. But I think it is a little bit expensive.

5 out of 5 stars Score one for me   March 7, 2010

The wife has not thrown it in the garbage so it must be good. Forty years a Japanese chef so it has to be good or it goes out the back door faster than it came in the front door. She has been using this one daily for several months and it has not made it into the scrap metal pile. Guess I scored a homerun with this purchase. Score one for me!! Would have been with bases loaded if the outside cover had been stainless also. Oh yes I'm very serious as I bought her a wok many years ago after coming back to the states and struck out early in the inning. She cooked dinner in it one night and the next morning it was in the back of the garbage truck going down the steet before I got out of bed. I guess that must have been the start of my training camp.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!   March 2, 2010

This is the perfect rice cooker both from a health perspective as well as from a convenience standpoint. Rice does not stick and is very easy to use. Simply love it!

2 out of 5 stars Not what I anticipated   February 19, 2010

I was excited to replace my Japanese teflon coated rice cooker. I'm Asian, so this has been a staple in our kitchen. I had replaced everything teflon coated over the years, but the rice-cooker was the last to go, because I never could find one that was all stainless before.

The first miracle rice cooker arrived dented and the rice paddle was broken. Seller promptly sent out another one. I thought that the glass top would be great to see the progress of the rice, but, as I had read, even with one cup of rice, the liquid sputtered over the edge. So, I HAVE to use the steamer to keep the sputtering and dripping over the edge. With the steamer in place, I can't even see what's really happening with the rice. It also seems that the amount of water required differs from the Japanese cooker.

So much liquid sputters out of the whole in the lid that I HAVE to put a paper towel on top of the lid in order to keep the counter and floors clean. It really is a messy cooker! I don't like it. Also, when we leave it on warm for a while, all the steam runs off the lid onto the perimeter of the interior pot and the rice gets really soggy around the edges. It doesn't seem to do NEARLY as good a job as the Japanese cooker, but since I have no other choice, I guess I'll just have to bear with it.

Also, a good bit of the rice sticks to the bottom, so we always have to cook extra rice in order to make up for the waste.

After my order, I got an email from Amazon re the Oyama cooker, but then I had also read that it has a silicone gasket...so...I don't know how healthy it is.
