5 out of 5 stars Best book substitute I've found   September 5, 2008
DLG (Hilliard, Ohio)
Having suffered from arthritis for a number of years now, it has become increasingly difficult for me to read traditional books, especially large ones of greater than 500 pages. I've tried books on tape, books on CD, and audio and ebooks on my computer. Though each one has its merits, none comes close as a substitute for a conventional book. In addition, the range of titles available in each of these formats proved to be somewhat limiting. As a life-long reader, these were important considerations in my decision to purchase a Kindle. After trying out my husband's Kindle, I decided to take the plunge, and I have not been disappointed. The "book" is small and light-weight and, when my wrists and hands do become tired, I just fold the Kindle cover and prop my book up, so I don't have to hold it at all. I've also found the availability of titles to be very good and to keep improving with time. (I even found Peter Mattheissen's newest book, Shadow Country, which I was unable to find before in any other format than hardbound. At 800+ pages, this certainly was not an option for me, given the state of my wrists.) I would also highly recommend the Mighty Bright book reading light for Kindle. With dual Kindles and dual Mighty Bright book lights, my husband and I now can read in bed without disturbing the other's sleep.

4 out of 5 stars No coverage overseas   September 5, 2008

I work in Egypt, home in the USA twice a year, finding this device of little use -- no coverage overseas. My wife spends six months a year with me, so maybe next year for her. This device does sound perfect for my wife. while I read scientific literature (medicine and astronomy), my wife would find it very useful for many of her book choices.

1. nice size screen
2. vast book collection
3. books cheaper than mobipocket ebooks or PDABookstore.
4. easy page turning, index and contant browsing
5. reasonably placed keyboard
6. wish it could link with Rhapsody togo.
7. wireless downloads reliable and fast.
8. Back plate comes off too easily.
9. very light weight and fairly thin.
10. i use a headlight set to low to read in bed. Aside from blinding my wife when i turn to kiss her, i remind her of the teenage nerdy John Cusack in sweet 16.

I love the Kindle. It has brought the joy of reading back into my life. Amazon really nailed it. I've bought 2 others since for gifts for my wife and assistant. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Kindle the new book   September 5, 2008

The Kindle is a remarkable device the only limiting thing I have found is that the research (in my case) books for archaeology is limited, hopefully this will change in the future but that was the principle reason for my purchase.
Still of the books I have read and taken clippings from it has been a very helpful device. Also it is a pleasure to read as the pages are not back lit it doesn't bother the eyes as much as a computer screen.
