Bright and eco-friendly but still too white March 12, 2008 K. Chu (Boston, MA USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought these bulbs to try out as a replacement for incandescent bulbs in strategic places around my home. Since I much prefer the warmer tones of incandescent light around my living room and bedroom, I knew I probably wouldn't like these compact fluorescents in those applications. I was right. The packaging says "Daylight" and gives a color temperature of 3500K, which should be reddish/yellowish. But as far as I can tell, it is the same harsh, stark-white light I have at work that I am loathe to bring home. At the same time, it is hard to argue with the efficiency. You get pretty much the same output of light from this 13W bulb compared to a 60W regular bulb. In the summer, your savings are double if you have A/C, because any energy waste in your home is wasted again as your A/C spends electricity to pump it out. On the other hand, in winter, you don't really save much at all, since the heat generated by your old incandescents now has to be made up by your heating unit. As a compromise, I installed these bulbs above the counters in my kitchen, and on the porch. These are places where I need the light without caring too much about the color. They are a drop-in replacement for standard household incandescents, and take no more effort to install. There may be about one second of delay when you flip the switch before it lights up, but there is no flicker or humming when it is on. You should also take care not to place these bulbs in places where they might be easily broken. These bulbs contain mercury compounds, like all fluorescents, so make sure to keep them out of reach of your children and pets. To summarize, the bulbs perform very well, pumping out tons of light for 13W, and will make you feel good about the energy savings. The light is constant and flicker-free, but I find it too stark white to use in my usual living spaces, which costs it a star.
Some issues, but overall a good bulb February 18, 2008 CJ (St Clair Shores, MI) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I purchased one of these Sylvania 13w "daylight" CFL's a year ago for frequent use in a table lamp in our den. If you are expecting a "daylight" temperature from this bulb, look elsewhere. It's 3500k, which is less yellow than the standard 2700k, but is more of a yellow tinged white than the true white I was looking for. This bulb also buzzes, even though the lamp does not dim. The buzzing is annoying when there is no other ambient noise, but not noticeable when the tv is on or people are talking. The start up of the bulb when newer was nearly instant and while it now takes a few seconds to get up to full brightness, it's still fast enough not to be an issue. Despite the problems, the bulb has long outlasted any other incandescent in the lamp, it runs far cooler than any incandescent and uses far less energy than an equivalent incandescent. I'd recommend it to anyone not wanting a true daylight bulb, but something less yellow than normal bulbs offer.

We've converted the whole house over to these lights, except for ceiling fans and the like. Give out as much light at 1/4th the electricity AND when the A/C is on we're not trying to heat and cool the house at the same time.....(put your hand at the top of a lampshade and see how much heat a regular bulb gives off).
These things are great! February 2, 2008 Ken A (Charlotte, NC United States) 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
I am no believer in manmade global warming, I just bought these to brighten up my place and to save money. I put six in the bathroom fixture and it looks like full sun in there. I replaced 6 x 40W bulbs with 6 x 13W bulbs, gained a ton of light and am saving 162 watts! The "Daylight" versions of these bulbs are much whiter and brighter. I am buying 6 more for other places like closets, etc.
