Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Get the most from spices, seeds, and coffee beans by grinding them fresh with this attractive Vase Grinder. The ceramic mechanism of this CrushGrind system is sharper and stronger than steel, and the adjustment wheel moves easily allowing you to choose from extra fine to coarse grind settings. You turn it over to grind meaning it keeps counters clean, and the absence of a central spindle allows more room for larger ingredients.

4 out of 5 stars A good grinder   September 5, 2008
Gary Ingram (Santa Cruz, CA USA)
We have 5 of these. My wife likes them because they are easy and dependable. They don't leave salt or pepper on the table (most important). You can easily see whether it's salt or pepper. Fresh ground salt, "Sal Du Mare" "gross" (French for "course") is much better (and saltier) than the stuff with the little girl on it. And a good black pepper is always better fresh ground. Be careful not to loose the spring if you adjust the grind. It has a tendency to pop out.

5 out of 5 stars Great grinder   July 6, 2008
G. Siver (Carol Stream, Illinois United States)
I have 2, this one for salt and a black one for pepper. It grounds very fine to coarse, easy to load. It grinds a nice amount, especially if you need/want a lot. Also, because you invert it, it keeps surfaces clean. The large base makes it easier for big hands as well. It's large enough where someone won't misplace it and cool looking as well as functional.

5 out of 5 stars great product   June 5, 2008
Alisha A. Witkowski (Florida)
I loved this seasoning grinder. I had a set and my daughter dropped one off the table..I needed to replace it and I decided to buy one for my mother too....she LOVED it. I use mine for salt and pepper and they leave no messy ring on the table or counter. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an easy to use and clean grinder.

1 out of 5 stars Broke on the second use   February 7, 2008
David Koppel (Lititz, PA United States)

I purchased this product for use as a spice grinder, as I have been making my own seasoning blends. The first time I used it went fairly well. although the opening used to fill the grinder is a bit inconvenient if you are adding smaller herbs or already-ground herbs for use in a blend (the opening is about the size of a quarter, and directly in the middle of the top/bottom). Filling is complicated by the fact that the attractive design means that you cannot place the grinder on a flat surface to fill it; you must hold it in one hand while pouring the herbs to be ground with the other hand.

The second time I used the grinder, I was making curry powder (one of the uses advertised on the packaging). The curry recipe calls for 1 piece of cinnamon stick, 1.5 inches long. The stick was difficult to grind, as it had to fall into the bottom of the vase just right, otherwise it stuck horizontally above the grinding mechanism. Halfway through grinding the cinnamon, the grinder broke, with the grinding mechanism coming completely away from the main body.

The grinder does come with a limited warranty (25 years for the ceramic grinder, 2 years for the plastic body), which I am currently pursuing, but for $30 I would have expected it to last more than two uses.

5 out of 5 stars The best herb/spice grinder around   May 16, 2007

I'm a pretty serious cook and have gone through several herb/spice grinders (they just don't stand up to my abuse). The Kuhn Rikon Vase Grinder is not only tough, but has an outstanding grinding mechanism - ceramic grinder allows for a variety of grinds, is easy to wash (so you can change the herb/spices regularly), and, so far, has survived daily use. Further, the Kuhn Rikon Vase Grinder is attractive (I leave them out on my bar), easy to use, and comes in fun colors.
