Beautiful enough to hold fruit on the counter or serve as a centerpiece on a dining room table, this 9-inch copper pedestal colander is lined with nickel and adorned with traditional brass handles. While it can be used for draining lettuce, berries, spinach, or other food, copperware this attractive is often used purely for decoration so it comes with a protective coating that prevents tarnishing. This colander is beautiful and shiney. I have received compliments on it from the day I put it on display in my kitchen. The workmanship is very good, especially for the price. You can't touch something like this at Sur la Table for $15.99 (the price I paid on Amazon). NOTE: if you want to use this for food preperation, you need to purchase a metal stripper and strip the colander. The colander has a coating on it to protect the copper. This copper helps resists tarnish (which is fabulous if you are using it to display like I am but bad if you want to actually USE it as a colander). I deducted a star because I think it needs to be noted that there is work involved if you do want to use it for food prep. Not just a washing but you need to purchase a special product.

Love the sheen and size of this colander. If you intend to use it for food, you'll have to remove the protective coating first. Got a great deal. It was in my gold box, and I had a gift certificate, so I paid about $.96 for this beauty!

I got this because I needed another colander in addition to my large stainless steel one. This one is smaller & would be perfect for rinsing smaller amounts of veggies, fruit & etc. I wish that I had known before I ordered it that I'm going to have to remove the protective finish if it's going to be used for food prep. I haven't used it yet because I've got to go to Home Depot or Lowes & purchase some kind of lacquer remover. No telling how much it's going to cost. Judging from the instructions, this isn't going to be an easy task. I did see the notation that states that it has a protective coating if it is going to be used for a decoration, but I didn't think that I would have to be doing some metal stripping in order to use it. I'm not sure I want to go through the hassel. I should have read the more detailed product description, but I always just read the features & the ratings. My bad! I've learned my lesson. I know a couple of people that have copper in their kitchens. I might see if they want to buy it (it was a good deal). I don't want to go through the hassel of returning it (I would have to pay for the shipping). Anyway- it is cute, but who wants to do all that work? I gave it 3 stars, because it is my fault that I didn't notice it needs stripping. I deducted 2 stars because I think that Amazon needs to make a special notation in the 'features' that it would have to be stripped.

The first colander I received was off-balance in the extreme - one side was fully half an inch lower than the other. But I'm thrilled that return of the defective item and replacement was so easy: in two days I had a perfect replacement in the kitchen - product and service on the level!
