Product Description
The adjustable toast height control allows you to make open style melts, crispy toasted snacks and to reheat pizza. Set it to "melt" to create delicious open tuna melts or set it to "open" for crispy snacks. You can also use it to toast and melt pita wraps, panini, and focaccia sandwiches. The heavy duty metal arms conceal the wiring, making this design durable, safe, and strong.

Amazon.com Review
Some sandwiches are just better toasted, and the Breville Maxi 2-in-1 panini press allows that all sandwiches might be. With its flat cooking plates and adjustable depth, the press does everything from reheating grilled cheese to creating café-quality focaccia sandwiches. A floating top plate and ten depth settings let you tailor use to your preference, recipe, or ingredients, and create consistent results whether sandwiches are wafer-thin or packed full.

A 1500-watt appliance, the press has a sturdy structure with high-powered wiring concealed in the heavy metal arms to keep operation safe. Warm up and ready lights make the cooking process more efficient, and the Quasar Rockcote nonstick plates wipe down well while letting you cook with little or no fat. Helpful details range from the hidden cord wrap to the non-skid feet, and the whole unit can be stored flat or on its side in tighter spaces. As with other Breville devices, the power cord has an unusual and helpful plug design with an easy-grab fingerhole. Sized for up to four full-scale sandwiches at a time, the press is suitable for sliced or bakery bread and comes in handy from breakfast on through to late-night snacking. It also looks good on your countertop in a matte black and gleaming chrome finish. --Emily Bedard

Just a heads up here on pricing for this panini press -

For some reason Amazon is selling this Breville SG820XL Maxi 2-in-1 Panini Press for $149, but it is available for $79 EVERYWHERE else. Check online sources, Bed & Bath, and others.
Sorry, I love Amazon, but something is VERY wrong here.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY FROM THESE PEOPLE   June 23, 2008

I purchased this product expecting a brand new product, as there is nothing stating otherwise. When I got it, come to find out that:
1)This product was previously purchased
3)This product was then returend to seller and was in turn bought by the seller on this page.
3)This product was broken

5 out of 5 stars All I can say is wow!   June 8, 2008

This thing is so well made and it's uses are virtually endless. We make pancakes, omlets, panini sandwiches, french toast, garlic bread, quesadillas, burgers and more on it. There are literally a hundred different ways you can use it. I did tell my husband that if I could choose only one kitchen appliance to use it would be this thing!! It blows that silly GT express out of the water!! We bought it a while ago and we still use it ALL THE TIME.

1 out of 5 stars Breville No Longer Makes This Model   June 3, 2008

You're better off buying the Breville BGR400XL Ikon 1800-Watt Removable-Plate Grill than buying this. It does a lot more than just make Paninis and it gets really hot for searing meat, and it's 1800 watts versus the 1500 of this model. Breville no longer makes this. They make a Panini maker sold only on their web site and through Williams-Sonoma, but for the same price you can get the Ikon and it has removable plates you can wash in the dishwasher as well as those 300 extra watts. It'll do paninis AND a lot more for the same price. And as for those removable plates, you have the option of using the flat side or the side with ridges by just turning them over.

And by the way, if you JUST want paninis you don't need a panini maker. You can use a flat griddle on your stove or a Lodge Logic cast iron frying pan (excellent and dirt cheap!) and you can weight the sandwich with a brick wrapped in tin foil and turn it over halfway through the cooking. It works just fine.

5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing   May 28, 2008

Many reviews have touched on why this "panini" press is great, so I'll just add a few specific details:

1) The height settings are great and I've never really had a problem finding a good height. Sometimes things are pressed just a bit more than you'd like, but overall the settings are notched closely enough that precision for things like quesadillas is easily attainable.

2) Stuff grilled in this thing is way juicier than I imagined it being. I threw in plain chicken breasts and they came out perfectly cooked and way more tender than baked or cooked in a pan. Hamburgers and sausages are amazingly juicy as well.

3) Versitile! Some of my favorite meals have been grilling a hamburger, toasting the buns, and re-heating mushrooms and onions. Or I made sausages and grilled onions at the same time (just threw down a pat of butter and tossed a whole slice of onion onto it and it came out delicious).

By far the most amazing thing I've done with this grill, though, is cook hotpockets straight out of the freeze. I used to spend forever cooking my hotpockets in my convection oven, but this grill makes them in a matter of minutes and they come out crispier than when made in an oven.

4) It's a fun and quick way to cook. As a grown man it's silly how excited I get to experiment with this thing ever meal! It's hard to find these anymore, and you might have to pay above the recommended retail price, but it's so worth it!
