Coffee and contemporary art meld in Villeroy & Boch's New Wave Caffe collection. Consisting exclusively of cups and saucers for hot coffee and espresso drinks, the all-white collection proves that fine china is not just for traditionalists. The wide handle on this all-white coffee mug swoops out of the rim, turns at an angle, and curves down to join the tapered base in a dramatic flourish. Both the mug and handle are crafted from one piece of vitrified china. Available separately is a wavy rectangular plate that holds the cup nicely in a round well, leaving a shelf for a New Wave spoon or favorite scone. Similar in shape to the other cups in the New Wave Caffe collection, the 11-3/4-ounce coffee mug is taller and slightly narrower than the café au lait and cappuccino cups. Each size has a matching plate that serves as a saucer, resulting in a striking contemporary combo that is sure to jazz up morning or after-dinner coffee. But they don't seem like they would work for left-handers! Many in my family are lefties. Bummer, though because these are very cool. Too bad they don't have the opposite design.

I first saw these mugs when my husband and I were on vacation in New Orleans a year ago at the Sheraton Hotel. It took me a year to track them down, and now I finally have them and love them! Amazon definitely had the best price. Even on sale at Bloomingdales, Amazon had a better price. Everyone we serve to, loves them as well. They have a certain sophistication that makes your morning coffee a wonderful experience!

This is the height of cool (literally, the handle stays comfortable) and style with a dollop of unconventionality as the kicker. The quality of the porcelain is high - european quality by this Luxemburg/German company with an extensive line in this style. I love the square plates and many other pieces as well. Believe me, this cup grows on you.
