Amazon.com Review Though initially introduced in 1952, Family Village is a winter pattern as delightful as a family heirloom discovered long-hidden in the attic. Traditionally shaped, each piece shows a detailed scene of bygone village life with such titles as Covered Bridge, Stone Wall, and Sugar Maples. The images look like black-and-white engravings that have been hand-tinted with soft colors, yet instead of being delicate, the earthenware stands up to rigorous daily use in the microwave, freezer, and dishwasher. Still made in the English tradition, with scalloped rims and leafy borders, Spode's Friendly Village continues to charm with its old-fashioned appeal. Included in this 28-piece set with service for four, are a number of unusual pieces. The 7-3/4-inch square salad plates, for instance, nicely accent the round 8-inch salad plates and 10-inch dinner plates. Small but versatile, the 5-inch fruit dishes come in handy for everything from fresh fruit at breakfast to afternoon snacks to a scoop of after-dinner sorbet, accompanied by coffee in the 9-ounce mug. Two sizes of bowls round out the set: a 6-inch cereal bowl and 8-1/2-inch rimmed soup bowl that also works well for pasta. This set differs from the other 28-piece Friendly Village set that features teacups and saucers. A full range of matching serving pieces, as well as enameled steel bakeware, is available separately for use throughout the holiday season. --Ann Bieri What's in the Box 4 place settings. Each place setting consists of: 10-inch dinner plate; 8-inch round salad plate; 7-3/4-inch square accent plate; 6-inch cereal bowl; 8-1/2-inch rimmed soup bowl; 5-inch fruit dish; 9-ounce mug. 28 pieces total.

Very satisfied! January 8, 2009 C. Crume (Fort Worth Texas) I absolutely love my new Johnson Brothers Friendly Village dishes! I had a few that were broken upon arrival but Amazon took care of it right away. The replacement process was so easy and took almost no effort on my part. I have gotten all kinds of compliments on these dishes. I highly recommend them.

My 2 sets arrived today in perfect condition and so beautiful I want to put them on display. What a bargain, with 3 sizes of bowls and the bonus square plates! The only thing that would have increased my satisfaction with this purchase would be that I had waited a couple of days to order them. The price dropped about $7/set. So if you're thinking about buying them, do it now and get the best deal around.
Wonderful Pattern, Not "Made in England" like my older pieces May 24, 2008 Frost Flower Fairy (2009...) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Okay. I got them, and 4 pieces were broken in a set of 16 place settings ... a hassle, but Amazon is sending replacements, and I get to ship back for free, so could have been worse. But, the biggest disappointment was discovering, that printed only on the paper tags, these were made in China ... not in England like all my prior pieces. I am actually strongly against made in China products. But, a relative saw the sets, asked if they could buy them from me ... so I'm okay in that I can now go out and see if I can find some still Made in England (I have my serious doubts, and I may be back to ordering more from here). On the upside, the dishes are gorgeous (the painting is a little different than my old pieces, but nothing you would seriously notice). The look great on the table, and this is a set that you can use for years. They are NOT china for anyone looking for china, these are stoneware. But, this is a pattern I love. Due to the made in China aspect, I am thinking about buying Spode Woodlands dishes, though ... I wonder if they are made in China as well now days.
what happened to "Made in England" ? September 23, 2007 J. Darigan-Botelho (Cornwall, New York) 6 out of 11 found this review helpful
I couldn't believe my luck when my absolutely favorite pattern of china came in a big value set like this, offered at a great price, free shipping,2 day arrival blah blah blah...frankly, everytime I use it I am still slightly suspicious, like I'm serving a meal to others on something out of someones car trunk...it just FEELS like a knock-off somehow, everytime.

These dishes are just beautiful. I love them and so does my daughter-in-law.I bought them as a gift to her. They fit a young life-style with mugs instead of cup and saucer and lots of bowls.
