I bought this to go with my Old Country Roses dishes and serveware. I thought the rectangular side would be like a cake server that could be slid under the item to be served, but it has a raised lip so it can'd be slid under anything. I'm not sure why it is made that way. It doesn't open very wide either, so it would not be useful for serving from a casserole dish. The decorated side is the shell side so it seems to me it would go on top. I tried turning it sideways, but then the raised lip is the only part that touches the other side and since the shell side is concave it doesn't grip anything well. I would not buy it again.
