First, 2k sounds like a lot to spend on a log splitter, at least to me. But if I take into account lost time and hospital bills for back problems, it doesn't look that expensive anymore.

Granted I have not used this very long so don't have reliability information to present, but I can at least tell you my initial impressions.

Extremely solid. Very heavy. I put it together by myself, but probably shouldn't have. Instructions are easy to follow. It's actually easy to assemble if you ignore the weight of the components. What is shown in the picture on Amazon is not what was delivered. Fenders aren't metal, they're plastic, there is no tongue wheel and no towing lights. Shame on Amazon. Also, no hydraulic fluid included. Purchasing this separately at a car parts store cost me close to $170 so be prepared. Mine took 8 gallons, not 7 as mentioned in the book. I will be splitting most of my wood at about 7,000' in the foothills, and the manual references a high altitude kit for > 5,000' to avoid engine damage. I guess there was no better place to mention that in advance, but it's something I have to address that I didn't count on.

This splitter doesn't hesitate at all on anything I've given it, including some pretty twisted and knotty Ash. Well, it does appear to go into a lower speed when things get tough, but nothing has stopped it. Green pine? No problem. The action is fast enough to split off kindling without making me feel bored. The oil filter can be cross referenced at the local car parts store so you don't have to mail order them from the manufacturer.

If it lasts a long time, this will be one of the best things I've done for my health.

Update:

After using it a while, I have some observations.

After a chilly night, engine was very easy to flood. I think now that I know the engine better, it shouldn't be a problem. Also after that chilly night, one of the factory-made hydraulic connections began to leak. It's a simple hose clamp, so a couple turns and it was fixed, but it's a bit disturbing to see. With the splitter in the vertical position, things rattle a lot. A few rubber bushings would prevent this. Also found that the maul sled needed adjustment almost immediately. Hope this is not wear beyond the paint layers coming off. If I were tasked with some design upgrades, I'd put some oiled felt pads either under or behind the sled with some wipers so that the travel surfaces remained clean and oiled at all times. When the surface of the beam becomes worn, there's no simple way to restore the travel surface.

Tilting the machine to orientations which are pretty normally seen by logging folk can cause hydraulic fluid to pour out of the breather hole in the fill plug. It's a very rudimentary breather so be careful.

I'm concerned about the long term wear on the control valve attachment. It's held in place only by one NPT connection directly to the piston assembly. If this is hit hard while moving it around it could snap and be a painful repair. If people tend to hang on their controls (you know the type) I could see this causing some problems.

Here's one that always gets me. While the engine is running, it's loud enough that my dogs can't even hear me let alone the old lady. If we can send a man to the moon, I think we can handle a muffler design that's more effective.

To summarize, this machine is an otherwise rock-solid piece of work, so it's surprising to see some weak points. These are pretty minor issues and they would not sway me from buying it if I had to choose again.

As other reviewers have noted, I researched this splitter extensively prior to my purchase. I chose the 240cc Honda motor as the best power source. Also, I live at nearly 6,000 ft. altituded, and I wanted to make sure that I had enough power to split green oak as you lose 3.5% of horse power for each 1,000 feet of altitude.

After receiving the large shipping crate, I put the unit together in about 2 hours with the help of my wife (she read the directions). The assembly is relatively simple if you have the proper tools readily available. I found that standing the splitting beam on end and backing the partially assembled trailer to the beam is much easier than trying to lift the unit onto the carriage (it is very heavy). Also, use pipe dope on the hose connnections (plumbers putty)as teflon tape should not be used on hyraulic fittings. Also, the specifications for the hyraulic fluid can be confusing as the instructions mention two types automatic transmission fluid (very expensive). You can buy 10 gallons of hydraulic fluid at NAPA for about $50, and it takes eight gallons to fill the reservoir and the hoses and pump. I also added a wheel jack ($22 at Harbor Freight) and took off the stand that came with my unit. The stand will be a nuisance if you want to move the unit or level it at a work area. With wheel, I can move the splitter easily in my garage.

Overall, this is a quality splitter that should provide many years of service. I particularly like the Honda engine as it starts easily and provides all of the power needed to make the splitter work effortlessly.

OK, I finally had a good enough excuse to justify buying a log splitter. I suffered a "massive rotator cuff" injury and had surgery in December. I recently started calling around and realized splitters are a seasonal item and most stores like Home Depot were completely out till September.

I found Lowes had an 8 ton and a 33 ton in stock. The 8 was too small and the 33 was too expensive. $2,099.00 to be exact. Then he said, "hey, wait a minute. There is one here that has had some repair done on it". I told him I really wanted to get a 20 ton, but asked what kind of deal he could give me on the 33. He talked to his manager and came back on the phone. He asked, "Would you be willing to pay $1,000.00"? I couldn't say yes fast enough!!! It was not only assembled, but I got them to give me 12 months same as cash!!!

Turns out the guy who bought it before me neglected to fill the hydraulic oil tank before starting the engine. $850.00 later it was just like new.

True it has plastic fenders, but I'm glad it does. They are flexible and that's good because the split wood frequently falls directly on the fender. Yes, it requires 8 gallons of fluid. No, it doesn't have tail lights. If I do decide to get them, I'll probably get the magnetic type like the tow trucks use. Again, the tail lights would be subject to breakage from falling wood and this way I could remove them when in use.

The one thing I am going to do is get a wheel like the one in the picture, which it doesn't have.I guess I can afford it.......

It is a great machine. I had some huge gnarley rounds I lugged over and it worked like a charm. Easy start, lots of power and a "user friendly" design. Overall, I couldn't be any happier!!

Splitter works great! There is a known problem with a leak in the tank near the tire (company admitted this and see previous reviews). The tank needs to be welded which can be a challenge to find someone local to do the warranty work. Worse yet, in my case, it leaked so quickly that the fluid ran low during the first few hour work session and the hydraulic pump seized. The welding took one day to get done. Now I wait (almost four weeks!) and Troy CAN NOT GET A REPLACEMENT PUMP. I've been told that they have NO PUMPS IN THE SYSTEM to get my equipment back up and working. Just be aware that, if you count on this as part of your business, you will be losing money waiting for the company to come through with warranty parts. NO PUMPS IN THE INVENTORY WITH NO IDEA WHEN THEY WILL BE ABLE TO GET ME ONE. Again, worked great for the few hours I used it....now it sits because the company cannot get parts for their own products that failed because of a known problem with the unit. If you purchase this unit, plan on heading to the repair shop for the weld fix right away. Otherwise, stay away until they resolve this problem.
UPDATE:::After nearly 8 weeks dealing with MTD/Troy with many unreturned calls from their support staff (to both me and my repair shop), with what seemed like an unlimited supply of excuses from one particularly lazy employee, I went to the Amazon Seller(Outdoor Store). I IMMEDIATELY found success. The rep told me that one of MTD's largest distributors had 25!!!! pumps in stock and would have no problem getting me a pump. This after the rep from MTD told me and my repair shop that there were absolutely no pumps available anywhere in their supply chain and I'd have to wait until they were manufactured. The pump was shipped w/in the following couple of days and my unit repaired. When I asked the tech at MTD to help coordinate the warranty issues, he again was unresponsive to providing such support and had no answer as to why their largest distributor had 25 pumps on their shelves for nearly two months while he repeatedly told me there were no pumps to be found. Amazon(Outdoor Store) gets 5 stars. MTD/Troy would get 0 stars. The equipment still gets 2 stars because, while it works well, there's a high likelihood you'll be dealing with this issue. The reviewer that posted the great deal from Lowe's that suggested the first operator didn't put oil in the unit, I suspect, is a pump seize issue because of the leak. The MTD guy at one point told me that if I bought it at Lowe's (because they're very aware of the leak issue) I should take it back to them, they'll exchange it right away and repair and resell. I didn't purchase from Lowe's so this wasn't an option. The rep I dealt with at Outdoor Store is representative of exactly what you'd want in a customer service person and represents her company exceptionally well. The rep I dealt with at MTD, unfortunately, typifies what we've come to expect from customer service and does a great disservice to MTD/Troy and their reputation. Good Luck.

I purchased this logsplitter a month ago and have used it three times since. I am taking time to write this in hopes of saving you some time in shopping around. Please note that I have rated it 5 stars because it works perfectly for what I intended it to do, and that is to split wood quickly and effortlessly. The pros and cons as I have experienced them:
Cons: Don't be misled by the picture. The splitter you will receive will be the new model. It will come without lights and wiring. It will have plastic fenders instead of diamond plate metal ones. The caster jack on the tongue has been replaced with just a metal support. I went out and purchased a caster tongue jack (like the one pictured) for $40.00 and it makes it much easier to roll around instead of having to lift it up. As far as assembly is concerned, it was easy but you will need some help lifting and moving some of the parts. It does not come with hydraulic oil; you will have to purchase about 8 gallons.
Pros: It is delivered in a well constructed crate with all parts securely packed. You paid for heavy duty and that is exactly what you get, there is nothing cheap about the amount of metal used it building the parts. The 8 HP Industrial Honda engine is the best, yes it comes with oil in it and it does start on the first pull. I have been running it at half throttle and thus far it has split every piece of hardwood, regardless of size, with utmost ease. Because I got this model on sale, it was by far the best value for the money and a name brand to boot. It may be more splitter than I need but my motto is, Go BIGGER or GO HOME. I will never look back and wish that I had bought the BIGGER one! I hope this has helped you in your search, happy splitting!
