Amazon.com Product Description The Mantis line trimmer attachment is an excellent alternative to noisy, smelly gas-powered line trimmers and weed wackers. Powered by electricity, it works without the unhealthy engine emissions or the noise to bother the neighbors. This attachment uses standard grade .095-inch trimmer line and comes with 20-foot spool. Simply tap the trimmer head on the ground to advance the trimmer line. This line trimmer easily attaches to an E-System power head.
Product Description Must be used with "MANTIS" E-System power head. Cuts the grass your mower can't get to. SPECIFICATIONS:24.5" shaft length. 16.75" cutting swath.

Mantis E-System line trimmer - not for the faint hearted May 30, 2008 George Stevens (Knoxville, TN USA) I bought this primarily for the line trimmer attachment and haven't tried the other attachments. As a line trimmer, it has pluses and minuses, but overall, I wouldn't recommend it for line trimming. I suspect it is probably pretty good with the hedge trimmer and tree pruning attachments, as noted by one reviewer who liked these. As a line trimmer, here are my pros and cons. PROS: - Good cutting swath (about 16" - 5" diameter spool plus double line, each about 5-1/2"). - Double line (never buy a trimmer with just one - based on experience, single lines have wimpy cutting ability). - Heavy gauge line (.095" - this is pro quality and about as good as it gets, it helps withstand wear and breakage). - Overall a sturdy well-built machine with high-quality materials. CONS: - This is a beast as a line trimmer - long, awkward, and extremely heavy--not for small women or older folks (using the over-the-shoulder strap is a must - place it at a diagonal across your chest, don't just sling it over one shoulder). - The RPMs are too high for light trimming, and you can't really feather the speed on the trigger - it's full on or full off, which means it slings stuff (trimmings, rocks, mulch) everywhere. - You have to depress a lock button (and continue to hold it) to pull the trigger, the trigger requires heavy, fatiguing finger pressure to keep it depressed, and the lock button pops out too easily if you let off the trigger even a little. - If you turn the trimmer upright to do some edging, it slings debris everywhere and it is especially awkward to hold the lock button in and keep the trigger depressed in this position. Additionally, at the high RPMs (that can't be feathered down to a lower speed), the line wears quickly and is prone to breakage. - Broken line requires stopping to remove the spool cover to re-thread the line. This is a common problem on a lot of line trimmers when you try to use them for edging, but re-threading the line on this one is more aggravating than most. - The power on this electric trimmer competes with a gas-powered one, but because of the high RPMs and no feathering ability on the speed, this power is only really useful on large expanses of heavy weed eating. You don't usually find this in small yards where you are doing light trimming tethered to an electric cord. - As with any electric trimmer, you are tethered to the electric cord. If you need to cover large areas, that means a long cord. A long cord means you're constantly fighting to keep from pulling the cord over top of and damaging small shrubs and flowers in the gardens you're trying to trim around. BOTTOM LINE: This may be a good choice for its other attachments, but not as a line trimmer. I really haven't found any electric line trimmer worth a darn. Stick to gas-powered unless you have just the skimpiest of areas to trim.
Wonderful multi-purpose system! June 9, 2006 J. Welch (Maryland) I was very skeptical about spending $100's on yard trimming equipment. But on becoming a new homeowner recently w/lots of lawn/trees/hedges, I've been forced to look around. The real reason I first considered Mantis e-system was because I have several VERY tall bushes I needed to really trim back, and I didn't want to do it on a ladder. I tried a cheap (bought at Home Depot) electric hedge trimmer "on a stick" that proved highly unsatisfactory. The balance was terrible (The electic motor was at the END of the trimmer next to the blade, making it agony to hold out at arms length.) So I finally gave in and bought the Mantis power head and hedge attachment, as well as the pruner. Trimming those bushes with those two attachments was wonderful! The power-head is VERY NICELY balanced with the motor counter-weighting the trimmer/pruner. And the build quality is superb--these are not Black/Decker (border-line cheap) quality tools--they're industrial. Lots of light/strong cast aluminum and obviously highly-machined metal parts. Very powerful motor--hedge-trimmer didn't bog down cutting through 1/4"+ branches, and the pruner easily went through a few 2-3" limbs without bogging down at all. I had a very minor problem with the oiling mechanism on the pruner not oiling as much as I thought it should, and Mantis's customer service response was immediate and wonderfully thorough, leaving me extremely satisfied. (Actually, that is the reason I was motivated to finally write this review--they are expensive tools, so one expects them to be high quality (which they are). But it was the customer service that has really won me over.) I have also bought the line trimmer and edger attachments, not so much because I need them, but because I have so fallen in love with these tools. I've used all tools about a month now, and have had no further problems or complaints. These tools are superior to any electric trimming tool I've used, and are comparable/better than the (admitedly few) gas-powered tools I've used. Note: I've just reread my posting, and it sounds like an infomercial. But it's not. I'm not in any way associated with Mantis--I just really came to enjoy these tools.
