Can I get a refund? Zero stars. September 21, 2008 M. Markoff (Seattle) I bought this along with the "Mantis E-System Electric Power Head". At first I was all excited to take care of business and show my overgrown hedge a thing or two. After a few sessions out there, the thing busted. I took it to a local dealer who took a week to replace a ball bearing or something, and then charged me 75 bucks. Apparently the warranty doesn't mean jack if you don't buy locally. Well, then I got another couple hours out of this thing before it broke again. All I can say is that if you have a hedge with anything more than a couple millimeters in diameter (mine is a laurel) use something else.
Hedge Trimmer Useless for Older Person August 4, 2008 Herb (Danville, AR) I purchased the Mantis E-System Hedge Trimmer with great expectations. They did not come true. First the unit is poorly balanced and difficult to operate. Next it has a built in engineering fault. After 45 minutes the unit froze up. I returned it and the second one froze up after another 35/40 minutes. I returned it and asked they properly repair the unit instead of sending me another new one with the same built in problem but they did not, instead sent me another new unit. I now have the third one but in 105 degree weather the hedge has stopped growing so I don't have anything to try it on. I doubt it will hold up though because the first two had a disc or shim in the gear housing that failed and I suspect they all do. These trimmers are just too heavy, poorly balanced, and faulty for a 77 year old to operate.
Don't Buy it... April 14, 2008 Henry Ferland 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I recently purchased this item to deal with a very high hedge. I previously used a regular trimmer and would balance precariously on a ladder to try to trim the top. This seemed like the perfect solution. Unfortunately it is not. It weighs a ton -- seriously, at least 40 pounds...so you are completely worn out by the time you are halfway through the job. Defeats the whole purpose of the system if you cannot lift it to do the job! I have returned mine -- and guess I'll have to eat half the cost (as I attempted to use it). Don't make my mistake.
Hedge Trimmer has a problem March 31, 2007 J. Bushnell (Solana Beach, CA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you happen to run into a branch 3/8 or more one of the blades jumps off the crank and it locks up. A shim in the crank area gets tangled up and has to be replaced frequenly. I have two of these and both have the same problem. It can be fixed but it takes time. If you can avoid larger branches it works fine but it only takes once. I have all the other attachments too which work fine especially the saw.
Wonderful multi-purpose system! June 9, 2006 J. Welch (Maryland) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was very skeptical about spending $100's on yard trimming equipment. But on becoming a new homeowner recently w/lots of lawn/trees/hedges, I've been forced to look around. The real reason I first considered Mantis e-system was because I have several VERY tall bushes I needed to really trim back, and I didn't want to do it on a ladder. I tried a cheap (bought at Home Depot) electric hedge trimmer "on a stick" that proved highly unsatisfactory. The balance was terrible (The electic motor was at the END of the trimmer next to the blade, making it agony to hold out at arms length.) So I finally gave in and bought the Mantis power head and hedge attachment, as well as the pruner. Trimming those bushes with those two attachments was wonderful! The power-head is VERY NICELY balanced with the motor counter-weighting the trimmer/pruner. And the build quality is superb--these are not Black/Decker (border-line cheap) quality tools--they're industrial. Lots of light/strong cast aluminum and obviously highly-machined metal parts. Very powerful motor--hedge-trimmer didn't bog down cutting through 1/4"+ branches, and the pruner easily went through a few 2-3" limbs without bogging down at all. I had a very minor problem with the oiling mechanism on the pruner not oiling as much as I thought it should, and Mantis's customer service response was immediate and wonderfully thorough, leaving me extremely satisfied. (Actually, that is the reason I was motivated to finally write this review--they are expensive tools, so one expects them to be high quality (which they are). But it was the customer service that has really won me over.) I have also bought the line trimmer and edger attachments, not so much because I need them, but because I have so fallen in love with these tools. I've used all tools about a month now, and have had no further problems or complaints. These tools are superior to any electric trimming tool I've used, and are comparable/better than the (admitedly few) gas-powered tools I've used. Note: I've just reread my posting, and it sounds like an infomercial. But it's not. I'm not in any way associated with Mantis--I just really came to enjoy these tools.
