Amazon.com Review
Sometimes the wheel needs to be reinvented, and the side-operation can opener, like this Good Grips Smooth Edge model from Oxo, is a case in point. Designed to operate on the horizontal, the opener makes a smooth cut below the can edge. The lid doesn't fall into the can, and the opener makes minimal contact with can contents. Built-in lid pliers let you grip the lid without touching it for clean and efficient removal. Though the large handles may be unwieldy for small hands, Oxo does use soft, nonslip material for a more comfortable grip. Like most standard manual openers, this unit is designed for right-handed operation. It measures 7-1/2 inches long and is safe for the dishwasher. --Emily Bedard

Product Description
The OXO Smooth Edge Can Opener cuts on the side of the can, below the edge - leaving no sharp edges on a can or lid. The side-wind knob with non-slip, comfortable grip is easy to use. The durable cutting wheel doesn't touch the can contents, while the lid pliers allow no-touch lid removal. It's a safe, hygenic way to open large & small lids.

4 out of 5 stars different can opener   August 30, 2008
Ann L. Veatch (Sumter, SC)
This is a good can opener but takes a while to figure it out. Most everyone else in my family loses patience with it. If you stick to it and learn how to work it it is very nice.

5 out of 5 stars What a difference a can opener can make!   August 28, 2008
Morosco (Richmond, Virginia USA)
I got fed up with buying can openers that did a poor job of opening cans or simply broke. I splurged on this opener and I absolutely love it. Seems built well enough to last a very long time. Cuts open cans with great precision. I've probably gained a few pounds because I can't resist opening another can with it!

1 out of 5 stars Useless - unable to open many cans   August 18, 2008
M. Poisot (Houston, TX)
I bought this because I saw a friend using one and thought it was cool. "no more sharp edges - why would you NOT want one?"

Unfortunately many, many can lids are sealed with glue. After you cut through the can lid, which often requires 2 full passes, the lid does not easily pull off. Instead you must use the "beak" attachment to pry the lid off. This can be physically difficult (which means I'm called into the kitchen to pull the sword out of the stone). About 5% of cans I encounter are still impossible to open this way, and I have to pull out my ugly, rusty, falling apart "traditional" opener to complete the task.

10 minutes to open a can? Memorizing which brands use glue? No way! I will donate this gizmo to some unlucky person, and will buy the "traditional" OXO can opener. Do yourself a favor and follow suit.

4 out of 5 stars Great Can Opener   August 13, 2008
CIF8589
We've had the good grips smooth edge can opener for a few weeks now and are very, very happy with it. It is very easy to open with and does leave a clean edge. I have not had to fight or struggle with a can yet (as I did with my old ones). I did have to teach my family how to use it as it is different from a standard can opener. Once shown, it's very easy to use.

3 out of 5 stars Good design, bad execution   August 10, 2008

Need to complete a couple of turns for the can top to come off, but it does so w/out burrs or sharp edges as advertised. Not the easiest model to seat on a can top. The top grabber teeth are gimmicky.
