Excellent purchase! September 28, 2008 Nancy E. Walker (NYC) I have a small kitchen and no spare counter space. I have owned a spacemaker can opener for over ten years and decided to replace it with a new one. I am so glad B&D have not discontinued this model. It is easy to install and works perfecty and since it is attached under my cabinets it does not interfer with my counter space. Great buy and well priced. N.Walker P.S. I installed it toward the back of my cabinet not the front edge,so it is not in my way.
Poorly engineered January 5, 2008 R. Tompson (720 mps from home) This can opener is the most frustrating appliance in my kitchen. My old Sunbean Space Saver can opener was wonderful. But after 20 years or so, it wore out. So I bought the Black and Decker. A Big Mistake. It is very very difficult to load a can, to position it in precisely the way the opener needs to have it. The opener is (by definition) mounted underneath a cabinet, and so it is hard to see the position of the can vis a vis the opener. And placement is absolutely critical with this piece of junk. I have bought one of those hand held, twist the knob openers. I do not use my B&D can opener, and at the first opportunity I will replace it.
Caution: Poor Mounting Design Won't Work on Some Cabinets November 10, 2007 Barry Lawrensen (Orange City, IA United States) We had a 10-year-old Spacemaker Can Opener that we liked. It died recently, and we purchased the less-costly version of this model at the large superstore near our home. I am a handyman (we built our own home) and this new model will NOT mount properly on European-style kitchen cabinets (with a full-overlay door)! I could make a shim to mount it perhaps 3" below the cabinet, but that would be ridiculous. The mounting for this uses four screws through the base of the cabinet, but there are two front screws within 1/2" of the front of the unit. And the lever swings up 1" ABOVE the top of the unit to insert a can. So the front two mounting screws would need to be mounted into the bottom edge of the cabinet door, or the can opener cannot be used! The printed installation instructions do point out to be sure that the can opener is mounted close enough to the front of the cabinet so that the lever will clear the front of the door. But in doing this, the front two screws cannot be used. So it is going back to the store. What is wrong with B&D Engineering?
I SHOULD HAVE LISTENED August 23, 2007 Don Thrul 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I should have listened to the other reviews and bought something else. I was replacing a Black & Decker under counter opener that worked like a charm for over 15 years until it broke. This opener is selective and opens some cans but not all cans the way the other one did. It's a crap shoot every time you want to open a can.... maybe it'll open it/maybe it won't. Save your money and buy something else.
Only lasted 2 months July 16, 2007 K. Schulz (chicopee, ma United States) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this at Walmart and was happy with it for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks it sounded like it was barely making it around each can. Than it got louder and sounded like it was moaning "ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR gRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRg aRRRRRRRRRRRR" and would only make it half way around the can. Finally it just died, well it still moans a little when you attempt to open a can, but it will no longer have anything to do with actually opening a can....it's dead.... What a piece of junk.....
