These are among the best dishes that I have never owned! I mean that completely and totally. I have no tolerance for anything that is cheap or of substandard quality and never would have purchased these, let alone kept them & used them for all this time if they were! They are just as good as my very formal china! There are so many reasons why I love these dishes!!
First, the design is great! They are absolutely stunning to look at. I don't think these pictures really do them justice. They are beautiful matte black (which almost gets more robust looking & shinier each time you put it in the dishwasher!) And it has some really trendy looking grayish stripes down the side that looks almost artistic in a creative and futuristic way. I also love the design and look of these dishes because it's very unassuming and neutral. You know how some dishes just hit you because they are so harsh and abrasive? You will never have that problem with this set! And black is my favorite color because it goes with absolutely everything! And since I love how these dishes look so much, I decided to purchase multiple sets and display one out in my kitchen. It looks very casual and welcoming. I have the dinner plates atop golden chargers and it looks so striking! And these dishes even make food taste better because they make everything look so appetizing and appealing! You know we all "eat" with our eyes first!
I also love the oversized size of this set. I suppose it could be described as "continental sizing." The mugs hold a full 17 ounces (that's more than a can of Pepsi!) And the dinner plates are absolutely huge! I love it because they almost look like chargers. And it's funny because the salad plates aren't much smaller than the size of my dinner plates in my last every-day dishware set!
The practical uses of these dishes are endless and amazing! They are dishwasher safe! That means so much to me! But it's almost like they were perfectly made for the dishwasher. You know how some dishes claim to be dishwasher safe but still need to be scrubbed or rinsed? I hate that. But that will never happen with this set! They also get bone dry on their own, simply by going in the dishwasher! And I have also noticed that my other items also tend to get cleaner and shinier when they are inside with this (especially my everyday flatware!) These dishes are microwave safe as well! That means so much to me and I know it means a lot to you too because who hasn't cracked a plate in the microwave? It is also conventional oven safe and freezer safe! The dishes are also very durable and will not chip or crack easily!
This is the first time I have ever purchased anything with the Pfaltzgraff name on it and I can't tell how happy and totally impressed I am with this company. Frankly, I was a little leery to buy from them because I've never heard of them before (but when I heard that they also manufacture Wallace Silver I was put at ease since I am very familiar with that brand.) Pfaltzgraff offers a five year limited warranty! They also offer a replacement guarantee (50% off!) And they also offer a 5-year in-stock guarantee for all of their dishes that have been discontinued or "retired." For example, this set, Night Surfer was retired in Oct. 2007. But that doesn't matter because they are still selling it and will continue to offer it for at least 5 years from that time!
I was also totally blown away by the price of this set. I couldn't even purchase a teacup from Fortunoff or even Bamburger's for what I paid for these! But, do you want to know a little secret? Go to the Pfaltzgraff site to buy these! Trust me! You will not be disappointed because everything they have is well over 50 per cent less than Amazon! I just recently purchased many of the accessory pieces as well from them that I am very happy with, at rock-bottom prices!
I noticed that another reviewer complained that these dishes "squeak." That is not true. I have used these dishes with all types of flatware (from run-of-the-mill 18/10 Reed & Barton stainless steel to 24ct. Villeroy & Boch gold flatware) and it has never squeaked! On the contrary, eating on these dishes just seems much more comfortable! I have even used my very expensive real Wallace Silver on these dishes too, and no squeaking!
If you're interested in getting a new everyday, casual set of dinnerware you have to get these! You will not be disappointed and will enjoy them for years and years to come!

My wife picked these out and they are very nice. The cups are nice and big (coffee shop style) and the bowls hold about twice as much as any normal corel dishes...nice if you like to haul that bowl of cereal downstairs to the den in the morning without spilling!
The pattern is great, but be aware the finish is a matte black finish that can "dull" if scratched with a knife...you won't see through the black to the ceramic, but it will show wear over the years. The finish also causes utensils to squeek rather loudly when cutting or picking up food. This is why I rated a 4 and not a 5.
The side dishes are also great. The serving bowls are very nice size and have that unique shape that's great.
